Controlling the waste

From next week we will be starting our beach clean-up weekly drives. It's quite a sad thing that we have to do these kinds of drives to keep our beaches and surroundings clean. I fail to understand why people cannot dispose off their waste properly and do not dirty public places. At our own home, we are so careful, we do not litter around, but when we are out, all this mindfulness vanishes. The maximum garbage that we find on the beaches is plastic water bottles, aeriated drink cans and tissues. First of all, I really do not appreciate much use of tissues, and here in middle east tissues are used like as if water is flowing.

When I shifted to Oman, I was shocked to see the kind of tissue use here. In my home back in India we never used tissues, I always had napkins everywhere for use, whether it is kitchen or dining table. But here people would demand and if not there they can pass some unfriendly comments. Even the use of plastic water bottles is lot, and that is global problem. Everyone wants to have mineral water when outside, and that's fair enough because it's safe for health. But a better alternative to it is to carry a bottle of water from home, so that there is no waste. 2 decades back that was the practice, whenever we stepped out of home for a picnic we would carry water bottles, napkins and everything that is reusable and not throw away. But now it's all changed. People use paper plates and plastic disposable cutlery when they travel. It is convenient, but one should be mindful of the disposal part and not leave for others to clean their mess.

Back home in India also, this is a problem. Near my own home in the hills, because it is a very open space, people come for adventures. Previously my area was not very popular, but in the last one year, it's getting lot of attention and lot of people are coming just for day picnics near the hills, and then they leave all their mess behind. I feel so furious. Such a beautiful sight it is and that garbage ruins it all. If I catch them red handed, then I make them clean up, but then all the time I am not watching.

Some of my clients do complaint, that why I do not have tissue boxes in the home. Nowadays I tell them beforehand that the tissue roll will be only available in the toilet, other than that there will be no tissues available in the home, then they can decide if they want to book my place or not.

There are lot of ways in which we can reduce our waste by using reusable things, which we already did in the past but seems like many people have forgotten about it. Now let's see next week how much waste we will recover from the beach.
