This Day in History: April 22, 1233 — “God’s Dogs” Unleashed

On April 22, 1233, the Dominican Order — formally known as the Ordo Praedicatorum (Order of Preachers) — was officially commissioned by the papacy to serve as its inquisitors in France. This date marks the institutional launch of the Papal Inquisition — a system not born out of biblical truth, but out of Rome’s lust for power and control over conscience.

The Dominicans were never true preachers of the Gospel.
They were created from the beginning to be the doctrinal enforcers of the papacy —
and were soon known throughout Europe as “Domini canes” — “God’s dogs.”

But this legacy of terror didn’t begin with them — it came directly from the thrones of three popes:

  1. Lotario dei Conti di Segni — “Pope Innocent III” (papacy: 1198–1216)
    • The mastermind of papal supremacy.
    • In 1209, launched the Albigensian Crusade against Christian dissenters in southern France.
    • His papal legate famously declared:
“Kill them all. God will know His own.”
    • Innocent’s reign enshrined the doctrine that the pope was not just a pastor, but a monarch “between God and man.”
    • He laid the legal and theological groundwork for violent religious tyranny in the name of Christ.

  1. Ugolino di Conti — “Pope Gregory IX” (papacy: 1227–1241)
    • Nephew of Innocent III, and the executor of his uncle’s dark vision.
    • On April 22, 1233, he formally empowered the Dominicans as inquisitors.
    • In 1231, through the decree Excommunicamus, he legalized torture and execution as tools of “orthodoxy.”
    • That same Gregory IX canonized Francis of Assisi in 1228 — co-opting his name and image into the Roman system, a tragic irony that would echo centuries later.

  1. Jorge Mario Bergoglio — “Pope Francis” (papacy: 2013–present)
    • The first Jesuit pope, and the first to ever take the name Francis — invoking the saint canonized by Gregory IX.
    • While modern and gentle in tone, Francis carries the same spirit of Antichrist —
not by fire, but by flattery, inclusion, and doctrinal erosion.
    • Under his leadership:
    • Same-sex couples are blessed
    • Trans-identifying individuals can serve as godparents
    • Hell is downplayed or denied
    • Salvation is offered without repentance
    • Francis has not reformed Rome’s legacy — he has simply refined it for modern ears.

Legacy:

From Lotario, to Ugolino, to Jorge, the papal line has not evolved —
it has perfected the art of deception, cloaking its thirst for power beneath the garments of religion.

The Dominicans — never Gospel preachers — were born as Rome’s spiritual attack dogs.
The popes — never Christ’s shepherds — were enthroned as emperors dressed in priestly robes.
And today, the world calls them holy.

“And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.”
— Revelation 17:6

But There Is Another Throne…

While the world mourns a pope,
while kings weep for a religious emperor,
while churches praise a man who traded truth for tolerance —
there remains One who is altogether different:
• Not elected by men, but begotten of the Father.
• Not seated by conclave, but exalted by resurrection.
• Not clothed in robes of gold, but in glory and righteousness.
• Not speaking ambiguity, but with a sword proceeding from His mouth.

He is not the Vicar of Christ —
He is Christ.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father,
The Prince of Peace.”
— Isaiah 9:6

“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”
— John 10:11

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.”
— Revelation 22:13

The True Holy Father

He cannot die.
He does not lie.
He cannot be replaced.
He is not swayed by public opinion.
He does not flatter sinners — He saves them.

He is not the head of a religious system,
He is the Head of the body, the Church, and the Lamb of God who was slain and is alive forevermore.

“Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.”
— Matthew 23:9

Let the world have its rituals.
Let Babylon exalt her kings and bury her popes in marble.

But as for us, we look to the Lamb on the throne.

Come to the True Shepherd

Friend, if you’ve placed your trust in men —
in robes, in rituals, in titles, in cathedrals —
turn away from the golden image and come to the living God.

No pope can save you.
No priest can absolve you.
No church can mediate between your soul and heaven.

But Jesus Christ can.

“Neither is there salvation in any other:
for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
— Acts 4:12

He died for sinners — all of them.
Not to flatter us in our sin, but to forgive us, cleanse us, and make us new.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28

There is no indulgence to buy, no mass to pay for, no pilgrimage to make.
There is only Christ — crucified, risen, and returning.

Repent. Believe. Call upon His name.
The gates of Babylon will fall, but the gates of heaven are still open.
