Pablo Picasso was in a brothel in Barcelona, but don't imagine the worst: he was simply trying to paint a group of prostitutes, it was a subject like any other; The problem was that I couldn't achieve it, I tried one pose and then another, I erased it and started again, like this a thousand times.
And the more he tried, the less real everything seemed to him, until he did something unexpected for everyone, maybe even for himself: he painted one of them with her face in front and in profile at the same time. The figure didn't fit, the proportions were strange, it seemed to be a little broken or glitched, but there was something magnetic about it, as if several realities were suddenly concentrated into a single image. This is how the painting "The Young Ladies of Avignon" was born, which gave rise to Cubism: a style that breaks down objects and bodies to present them simultaneously from all angles.
Reality stopped being something that was represented and became something that was dissected like a body on which you perform a visual autopsy. The world became something that could be broken, rebuilt and observed from another perspective, which altered everything; not only in painting, but also in sculpture, design and architecture. Without many realizing it, this even affected cinema: today you can see a scene from different points of view, a crime narrated by three different people or a messy story that only makes sense at the end.
All of this, the decomposed narrative, the non-sequential assembly and the multiple focus are also cubism. So, when you watch a movie or play a video game that requires you to put pieces together like a puzzle, remember Picasso, his prostitutes, and the fact that mistakes can transform the world if taken in the right perspective.
