Everyone starts with a curiosity; The first modern antibiotic

You already know that a scientist saved millions of lives when he went on vacation. Alexander Fleming's laboratory was not exactly a model of cleanliness, with uncovered flasks, open plates, and scattered cultures; sometimes it had more of the appearance of a kitchen in a flat shared by students.

In 1928, before leaving for a few days at his country house for vacation, he left several plates with staphylococcus bacteria on the table, without covering or sterilizing them. The plates remained open for several days, breathing the laboratory air. What he did not suspect was that this small act of total negligence would bring him a Nobel Prize.

Upon returning, after many days, the plates were contaminated, as expected; However, in one of them he observed something unusual. A little mold had grown and around it there was a clean circle, without any bacteria, as if it had been swept away by something invisible; that fungus had eliminated only the bacteria.

No other pollution had ever done that before; It seemed as if the fungus knew how to identify the enemy. Alexander Fleming, who was a very observant person, noticed that there was something new there and probably with great potential. He could have just cleaned everything and thrown it in the trash like any other hangover Monday, but he didn't: he observed the fungus, grew it, and gave it the name peniciliumnotatum.

Penicillin was the first modern antibiotic, and since then antibiotics have saved millions of lives. It all started with a little mold, carelessness and a lot of curiosity. Moral: The next time you leave dishes unwashed, think that you could be closer to winning a Nobel Prize.
