For the first time in history they created an antimatter cubit

Recently, an important achievement has just occurred: CERN scientists managed to achieve, for the first time in history, they created an antimatter qubit by controlling a single antiproton in the laboratory. The experiment was conducted by the BASE project, which managed to make that antiproon gently oscillate between two quantum spin states for 50 seconds, a record coherence time.

To understand the importance of this, just remember that spin works as a kind of microscopic compass, it can point up or down and that alternation when controlled is the basis of a qubit. The achievement is even more impressive because previous measurements were very sensitive to ambient noise and did not allow for this type of coherent control.

The technique used is called coherent quantum transition spectroscopy. In simple terms, electromagnetic pulses were applied at the exact moment, as if someone pushed a child on a swing, always at the right moment, keeping the rhythm stable. That swing, in this case, was the antiproton oscillating between its two spin states. In addition, the scientists suppressed interference from the magnetic field, reducing the possibility of the particle losing coherence prematurely.

It is important to note that despite being a qubit, the intention here is not to use it in quantum computers in the short term, the real objective is much more fundamental, to precisely study the symmetry between matter and antimatter, according to the theory, both should behave identically, but if a difference were one day found, this could reveal new physics beyond the standard model and even help explain why the universe has so much more matter than antimatter.

The team's next step is BASE-STEP, a system created to transport antiprotons to environments with even less noise. The expectation is that under these conditions the spin coherence time can reach 500 seconds, 10 times longer than the current record. If that leap is achieved, we will have an even more powerful instrument to unravel cosmic secrets that science has sought for decades.
