Google presents the Giant CO₂ battery

If CO2, which is one of the villains of global warming, could be used to guarantee clean and stable energy for an entire day, it seems contradictory, but it is exactly what Google is doing.

In partnership with the Italian company Energy Dume, the technology giant is transforming carbon dioxide into a key element to stabilize the electrical grid supplied by renewable sources, the system developed by Energy Dume works in an ingenious way, a large dome stores CO2 that when there is excess solar or wind energy is compressed until it becomes liquid and stored.

When the grid needs extra electricity, that liquid is reconverted into gas by moving turbines and generating energy, a process comparable to the release of steam from a prison pot. After use, the CO2 returns to the dome and the cycle can be repeated infinitely.

While the current standard Lithium Ion batteries for electrical grids offer around 4 hours of autonomy, Energy Dume's CO2 battery can supply up to 24 hours of clean energy continuously, this difference is crucial to face prolonged periods of low renewable generation, which makes the solution much more practical to maintain the stability of the electrical grid.

The technology has already gone from paper to practice, Energy Dome operates a commercial plant in Italy demonstrating that the stable concept, with the investment and association of Google, is expected to expand this solution to clean energy projects around the world, serving both the company's own operations and communities that need reliable and accessible electricity.
