It all starts with curiosity, Sagittarius A*

You know we're orbiting a black hole, yes, because there's a huge black hole right in the center of our Milky Way galaxy, and it's alive and well, it's called Sagittarius A*, it's 4 million times the mass of the sun. He seems calm, but sometimes he releases flashes that illuminate the heart of the galaxy. We do not see it directly because our own galaxy covers it from us.

We are separated from it by 26,000 light years and a lot of interstellar gas and dust, but there is lurking waiting, we are orbiting a beast so big that it has devoured entire stars millions of years before human beings existed and we can't even see it.

This black hole cannot be seen, what you see shining in movies and documentaries is not the black hole as such, it is what is called the accretion disk, a ring of gas and dust that rotates around the hole at brutal speeds, it is the desperate matter trying not to fall inside.

The closer it is, the faster it spins and the hotter it becomes, the accretion disk that surrounds it can reach millions of degrees and emit X-rays and light with an intensity greater than an entire galaxy, we do not see the black hole itself, we see the stellar feast that is taking place, chilling.
