NASA is inviting inventors from around the world, from students to engineers, for an unusual challenge: reinvent the wheel, not literally, but reimagine a version for use in space exploration.
Dubbed Rock and Roll with NASA Challenge, the contest aims to find a new standard in wheels for lunar vehicles with a focus on lightness, durability and flexibility, and yes, the winning projects will be able to be tested directly by NASA itself.
The mission of the United States Space Agency is clear, to make the human presence on the Moon sustainable, for this reason the rovers face rugged terrain, abrasive dust and extreme variations in temperature, conventional wheels, such as those used in the Apollo missions, have already shown limitations, now, with the new generation of vehicles such as the micro Carry Rover, the agency wants to completely reinvent the concept of lunar mobility and for that it is calling on the entire planet to help.
The challenge will occur in three phases, the first will be focused on the creation of concepts and technical foundations, then comes the prototyping phase and finally the big demonstration in 2026.
The most promising prototypes will be shown on a land rover that simulates lunar conditions and will be tested at speeds of up to 24 km/h with prizes totaling up to $150,000. The proposal of NASA and the Hero X platform is to reveal hidden talents in schools, universities, startups and even home workshops.
The winners will not only receive money and recognition, but they will be able to see their ideas literally rolling in the tests of the most prestigious space agency on the planet.
