They synthesize a 100% natural plastic

It is necessary to create a type of plastic that simply disappears over time without leaving waste, micro plastics, or any threat to the environment or humanity, this is increasingly real because Australian scientists using native microbes created a bio plastic that can decompose completely, reversing the cycle of destruction of conventional plastics.

Instead of contaminating oceans and soils, this new material is integrated into nature as if it had never existed. The magic happens with the help of microorganisms that live in local environments. These microbes, accustomed to the scarcity of nutrients, naturally store a substance called PHB, an organic polymer with properties similar to plastic.

Scientists from Murdoch University and the Bioplastics Innovation Hub managed to extract PHB from these bacteria and transform it into a functional bioplastic that can be used to manufacture everything from straws to coatings for food packaging.

Unlike traditional plastics that fragment into toxic particles and last for centuries, PHB-based bioplastic degrades naturally in the environment without leaving harmful residues, this occurs because it is composed of molecules that are part of nature's organic cycle. Furthermore, as the material is produced by non-genetically modified bacteria and comes from the local ecosystem, it represents a minimal risk to human and environmental health, respecting the principles of compostability and food safety.

With more than 80% of food packaging in Australia ending up in landfill and billions of tonnes of plastic rubbish circulating around the world, the adoption of disappearing plastic could represent a quiet revolution.

This material can replace traditional plastic in products that require a protective layer such as meats, breads or processed foods. If humanity manages to transform this type of innovation into a global standard, there may still be time to reverse some of the damage caused by conventional plastics.
