As you all know, pallets are horizontal, rigid platforms used in logistics and the supply chain to efficiently group, store, and transport goods. They function as a base on which loads are placed, facilitating handling, optimizing storage space, and protecting the merchandise. All these features have made them essential in all logistics operations, to the point that, according to some experts, more than millions of them are manufactured annually.
Como todos sabéis, los "pallets" (también conocidos como paletas, tarimas o palés) son plataformas horizontales y rígidas que se utilizan en la logística y la cadena de suministro para agrupar, almacenar y transportar mercancías de manera eficiente. Funcionan como una base sobre la cual se coloca la carga facilitando su manejo, optimizando el espacio de almacenamiento y protegiendo la mercancía. Todas estas prestaciones han hecho que se hayan vuelto imprescindibles en toda la logística hasta el punto de que, según algunos expertos, se fabrican miles de millones actualmente.
The most worrying aspect is that pallets are mostly made of wood, and their manufacture involves the felling of 170 million trees annually, significantly exacerbating the problem of deforestation. To try to mitigate this problem, the Bulgarian startup GeenPallets has launched an initiative to manufacture logistics pallets using sunflower husks, transforming this agricultural waste into an ecological and efficient alternative to traditional wooden pallets.
Lo más preocupante es que mayormente los pallets están hechos de madera y su fabricación implica la tala de 170 millones de árboles anualmente lo cual agrava significativamente el problema de la deforestación. Para intentar mitigar este problema la startup búlgara GeenPallets ha puesto en marcha una iniciativa consistente en fabricar pallets logísticos mediante el aprovechamiento de cáscaras de girasol transformando este residuo agrícola en una alternativa ecológica y eficiente frente a los pallets tradicionales de madera.

Green Pallets are composed of 95% plant biomass (mainly sunflower hulls) and 5% organic polymer binder, making them lightweight, compact, durable, and free of harmful substances. Therefore, they are suitable for transporting food, medicines, and electronic products, as they meet health standards and do not require heat treatment or phytosanitary certifications according to international regulations, making them easy to use for export.

They are compostable and recyclable, as at the end of their useful life they can be composted or shredded to make new pallets, enabling a zero-waste circular model. The design saves up to 60% of space in warehouses and transportation, reducing logistics costs and the environmental footprint due to smaller volume and lower fuel consumption. Their manufacture uses local agricultural waste, which avoids logging and burning biomass, reducing CO2 emissions and energy consumption by up to 80%.
Son compostables y reciclables ya que al final de su vida útil pueden transformarse en compost o triturarse para fabricar nuevos pallets, permitiendo un modelo circular sin residuos. El diseño ahorra hasta un 60% de espacio en almacenes y transporte, reduciendo costes logísticos y la huella ambiental por menor volumen y menor consumo de combustible. Su fabricación utiliza un residuo agrícola local lo que evita la tala de árboles y la quema de biomasa, reduciendo las emisiones de CO2 y el consumo energético es hasta un 80%.
