I am glad you are okay. I had the same thing when walking my dog a couple of times. I smelled gas and called the gas company and they came out and check the locations I noted the smell was coming from. I think it is time they do some serious upgrading of their pipe lines as this makes five leaks on our street in the last few years with three of those being out front of my house. Usually what it is is the clamp that connects two pipes together in the ground having rusted and rotted away, they now use some sort of membrane material to replace old metal connections. I also one time had a small leak coming from the furnace piping where there was a connector. The gas company came out and said the screw holding the connector onto the pipes was bad. I turned off the furnace and used some JB Weld over the screw until I had the furnace repair guy fix it before winter. I wasn't in a hurry as I was not using it at the time, only the pilot was still lite so I just turned it off and fixed the leak just in case. If I remember right it was like a hundred twenty five bucks to fix it but it was still a cost savings as I knew I had my four year inspection on my duplex coming up so I chose to have him fix it while he was here for that to save on not having an additional service call charge. Which is why I waited. Two furnace inspections and a connector replacement for one twenty five wasn't bad. I trust those guys though after the initial visit the first time to fix my shop furnace. The part that wasn't working just needed to be lubricated and jarred a bit from being stuck...I think anyone else would have just said the part was bad to make money off selling you the part...that bit of honesty won them over for me, you just don't see that now a days. They were older gents to, maybe more knowledgeable about old school ways to get parts working again.
