Lately, I've been wondering why artificial intelligence hasn't yet been integrated into toys. It would really be fascinating for children to be able to talk to their stuffed animals as if they were their friends. But it seems I wasn't the only one wondering this. Someone smarter than me has come up with the idea, and partnerships are beginning between major toy companies and companies developing artificial intelligence models. In this case, it's OpenAI's partnership with the legendary Mattel.

The iconic toy company behind brands like Barbie and Hot Wheels has announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to develop a new generation of toys and experiences powered by artificial intelligence. The first product resulting from this collaboration is expected to be announced by the end of 2025. Both Mattel and OpenAI should be aware of strict data protection regulations, especially when it comes to children, which is why they have publicly stated that privacy and security will be priorities in the development of their AI toys. Both the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe have specific laws for all of these cases, but they must be enforced.

It's expected that this same philosophy will apply to AI toys. Products and experiences will be designed to be "age-appropriate" and will have content filters to ensure AI interactions are safe and appropriate for child development.

The amount of personal information collected is expected to be the minimum necessary for the toy or experience to function, so Mattel and OpenAI will commit to implementing reasonable security procedures to protect the confidentiality and integrity of any information collected. This would include safeguards in how the data is stored, processed, and transmitted, as well as, of course, a range of parental controls so they can access, review, update, or delete their children's information at any time.

Personally, I think this is truly dangerous. We all know that today's parents don't allow for constant monitoring of their children's consumption. Fortunately or unfortunately, I haven't had children, so I'm spared from this. But I believe that if done right, it's an excellent opportunity to greatly improve the quality of our children's education. However, we mustn't forget that there's a lot of money at stake behind this initiative, and honesty and money don't mix well.
