I think I once said in this blog that, while we all focus on talking about artificial intelligence, its achievements and how humanity will end, genetic engineering advances silently and this, in my opinion, can be much more dangerous. Not even a century ago that DNA was discovered and just twenty years ago that the human genome could be decoded and we already have tools capable of cutting and paste DNA as if it were a text editor on a computer. Now it seems that we want to make totally synthetic DNA.
Creo haber comentado alguna vez que en este blog, mientras todos nos centramos en hablar de la inteligencia artificial, de sus logros y de como va a terminar con la humanidad, la ingeniería genética avanza silenciosamente y esto, a mi juicio, puede ser mucho más peligroso. Ni siquiera hace un siglo que se descubrió el ADN y hace apenas veinte años que se pudo decodificar el genoma humano y ya tenemos herramientas capaces de cortar y pegar ADN como si se tratase de un editor de texto en un ordenador. Ahora parece que queremos hacer ADN totalmente sintético.
This is the project known as the synthetic human genome project that seeks to create artificial human DNA synthesizing, from scratch, the basic components of human genetic material. This new project aims to artificially build increasingly large segments of human DNA, with the long -term goal of creating even complete chromosomes in the laboratory, containing the genes responsible for the development, repair and maintenance of our body synthetically.
Se trata del proyecto conocido como Proyecto Genoma Humano Sintético (Human Genome Project-Write) que busca crear ADN humano artificial sintetizando, desde cero, los componentes básicos del material genético humano. Este nuevo proyecto pretende construir artificialmente segmentos cada vez más grandes de ADN humano, con la meta a largo plazo de crear incluso cromosomas completos en el laboratorio que contengan los genes responsables del desarrollo, reparación y mantenimiento de nuestro organismo.

Although there are measures and standards to control DNA synthesis and detect dangerous sequences, these are not always uniform or mandatory for all countries or for private sector actors, which significantly increases the risk of misuse. Therefore, experts and project funders insist that it is crucial to move forward responsibly and within a rigorous ethical framework, seeking to anticipate potential risks and establishing strict controls to prevent abuse.
Aunque hay medidas y normas para controlar la síntesis de ADN y detectar secuencias peligrosas, estas no siempre son uniformes ni obligatorias para todos los países, ni para los actores del sector privado, lo que aumenta significativamente el riesgo de mal uso. Por ello, expertos y financiadores del proyecto insisten en que es crucial avanzar de manera responsable y con un marco ético riguroso, buscando anticiparse a los posibles riesgos y estableciendo controles estrictos para evitar abusos.
Fortunately, although the project is underway with promising progress, we are still in the initial phase of construction and experimentation. The complete synthesis of an artificial human genome is an ambitious goal that could take many years, although current advances are already transforming biology and experimental medicine. I hope we have enough time to create an ethical framework that can curb the megalomaniacal impulses of some current figures.
Afortunadamente, aunque el proyecto está en marcha con avances prometedores, aún estamos en una fase inicial de construcción y experimentación.
