I actually thought of mentioning that one in the article. It's a classic.

Oh and I can totally imagine Gervais rubbing people the wrong way, but I do think he's authentic at least. Annoying and arrogant can still be authentic.

I know someone who went to the same uni as him and she used to see him often at parties. She has a photo of him as a new romantic wearing guy liner and he was very slim and cute! No idea how true this is but she said that he was quiet and hung out with all the smack heads, though he didn't appear to be on drugs himself.
I believe her because ex-heroin addicts have a way of talking and a wild look in their eyes that he clearly does not have. He obviously just studied people and their foibles the way introverts do and combined his observations with a keen wit and great writing skills.
In out-takes that I've seen he just giggles all the time. He's a comic genius and a great actor; not remotely like Brent. I mean seriously, would someone like Brent be able to make massive stars take the piss out of themselves to this extent? No way!

I agree. I think he annoys people, with his giggling and shrieking, and fair play if that's the case.

But if anyone dislikes him because they think he's like Brent, that's pretty unfair.

I think Ricky must have a big heart or I can't see how he could have created a show like Derek. For all it's arguably clumsy sentimentality, that show is totally heart-on-your-sleeve and would have taken a lot of courage to write.
