Odd but fun: 10 years annual event on the 11th of July

in #running10 hours ago

We are a silly bunch, we make that no secret. Every year on the 11th of July we have our 7-11 run where we have wimp and rambo trails in downtown Chiang Mai. This entire event is a piss-take in how many 7-11 stores there are in Thailand generally speaking.

We actually do this event twice a year so we can placate both notions of DDMMYY as well as MMDDYY, there will be another on the 7th of November as well, so calm your tits if you are opposed to the American notion of listing dates.

An event in the middle of the city comes with some unique challenges because we cannot use chalk on the ground to indicate where the trail goes, it will be washed away by rain, hoses, brooms, car-wind,or just a number of things. Any signs we might tape to poles could suffer the same fate. So instead there are not going to be very many circle checks but instead we are going to post humans in 7/11 shirts on certain corners. They have been instructed to not tell you which direction that you are meant to go in, but you have to look for it then shout out the usual "On On" to indicate to the group that you have found the path. Trust me, they don't let you go the wrong way.

At each 7/11 beer was available, but we strongly encouraged people to not have 7 or god forbid, 11 beers during the 5k, one hour or so endeavor.

If you don't live here and don't know, 7/11's really are in a ridiculous amount of places. I found this map indicating where they are in Thailand and well, you get the idea

There are so many of them that I can't say for certain that this is definitely Thailand, but honestly, this is accurate. No matter where you are in Thailand you are not very far away from a 7/11. They are a godsend for when you need a processed ham and cheese toasted sandwich at 330 in the morning.

Our usual shenanigans applied of course, but this time we asked everyone to wear green orange and red in honor of the 7/11 uniform. Is it appreciated? I don't know. Probably not but this has never stopped us in the past.

While I would like to say that this was a Chiang Mai idea that is not the case. Apparently, it is a global-ish event that everyone who is as silly as we are participates in. Someone forwarded me this Tweet

So if you are in one of those places you have another chance to participate in a Hash House Harriers event on the 7th of November when it will be done again. It's great fun and a different kind of run. You'll make a lot of friends and if you want, you can have a ham and cheese toastie as well.

On On!
