Think of SL as something of an evolution of MMOGs. Unlike single-player games, which usually have an ending, massively multiplayer online games are meant to be played continuously. They are always on, always present, and there is no ending.

This presents something of a challenge to the designers. In order for people to want to continue playing the MMORPG, new content has to be included.

So, imagine that somebody has an idea. Why not give the players themselves the power to create new content? Let’s embed within the MMORPG the means to build stuff, to form groups, to stream video and music. Let’s give them the opportunity to create their own entertainment.

Now you have a virtual world where, if there can be said to be a point to all of it, it would be to figure out what you want to do. Maybe you will enjoy the pursuits others have already included. Personally, I like attending philosophical discussion groups and shopping for nice things for Jamie and I to wear. There are some great SL artists who design whole islands full of amazing art pieces.

I know what you mean about the complexity. I have been in SL for over a decade and I still struggle with some aspects of it.
