    In the late 1980's I knew a guy who was a professional gambler. Back in the day the point spread used to be published in the newspapers. One day he took the paper and went through all of the games and the spreads. He bascially told me how each game was going to play out. It went pretty much like he said. He explained to me it was never about dunks and 3 pointers. It was always about free throws and how the refs called the game. Mind you this was way before Donaghy. He told me to notice when a team is up big late and the starters have been pulled. If the other team makes a late run an then the other team puts the starters back in they are playing the spread. They are not in danger of losing the game, it is about the spread. Or when a football team kicks a late meaningless field goal? They are playing the spread. In 1990 the NCAA was going to take down Tarkanian and the Rebels. He told me that Vegas was going to win the tournament. However, that Vegas would be even better the following season and would not be allowed to win. After winning,the NCAA stated that Vegas was going to be put on probation. However they were going to allow Vegas to defend their title and go on probation the following season. They stated that and be placed on probabtion the season after next. When they did that, we knew the fix was in. They could not let Vegas go undefeated and sit out the tournament. Because whoever won, everyone would have said "yeah,but you did not beat Vegas."
