There are places you visit not just for the scenery, but for the story they carry. The Jetty Waterfront in Ilaje-Bariga is one of such places. Once known for insecurity, but today it stands as a peaceful space where boats glide, families gather, and lovers come to catch a nice time. I decided to spend a day there, not only to see its beauty, but to feel its spirit. You didn't know it's called "Love Lagos", I think that is why we see more lovers go there to spend quality time.

The waterfront sits right by the Lagos Lagoon in Ilaje-Bariga, making it a great link to other parts of the city. It’s very easy to access through Ilaje Road, which was recently upgraded with a wide carriageway, drainage, and streetlights, I think the government woke up to do something meaningful. The lagoon itself is the most striking geographical feature around Ilaje-Bariga, and as wide as it is, it gives the place both beauty and purpose.

Talking about the background of the jetty, is part of what makes it special. This site used to be a neglected area known for insecurity and cultism. But in 2019, the Lagos State Government transformed it into a modern jetty and recreation space. So instead of fear, it now brings opportunities for safe water transport and leisure. To me, that history of renewal adds a layer of meaning, it’s not just infrastructure, it’s a story of change. People now go to work from there, parking their cars and returning to find it safe.

The peaceful nature is soothing. From the jetty, you get an uninterrupted views of the lagoon. Well, people are not allowed into the jetty proper. When the sun sets, the sky reflects orange and gold over the water, creating one of the best photo spots in Bariga. It’s a place that makes you take a break and breath as you admire nature.

As for it's wildlife, I spotted some kids in a boat going fishing with their nets, often accompanied by the sight of birds swooping low across the water. The waterfront doesn’t have dense greenery, its mostly faced with fishermen who have built themselves a place to live around the lagoon.

Activities here are centered around the water. There are various routes connected to this waterfront, places like; CMS, Ikorodu, Apapa, and even leisure trips to Takwa Bay. On weekends, the jetty sometimes hosts entertainment events with music and games especially in evenings. It’s also a great spot for sightseeing, photography, or simply sitting by the lagoon to enjoy the breeze and view.

The facilities are quite impressive, I was wowed at my first visit. They have a large parking space, ticketing booths, restrooms, kiosks, and a small restaurant that bubble at weekends. Jetty has also got a shaded seating areas that looks so comfortable to wait, spend time, or meditate.

The best time to visit is late afternoon toward sunset. The light is softer, the weather cooler, and the view absolutely breathtaking. For photographers, it’s the golden hour, you can imagine.

Interestingly, entry is free. Yes, you only pay for ferry rides or food. Safety measures like life jackets are compulsory on boats, and visitors are advised to keep the environment clean, yes because the place is already a neat place.

For me, it was a peaceful atmosphere, sitting there, watching the water and listening to the boats hum, I felt both calm and moved to do better things. As a visitors, I would advice you don’t just rush to catch a ferry when you visit, just take your time to sit and enjoy the breeze, and watch the lagoon glow at sunset, just sit and see what it looks like. That’s where the magic truly is.
