Pratappur Zamindar Bari A Historical Place At Feni
Assalamu Alaikum
Bangladesh is a land rich in historical heritage. Many palaces built during the reigns of kings, emperors, and zamindars in the Indian subcontinent still stand today as silent witnesses to history. For nearly 200 years, the British ruled this region, and during that time, their local collaborators — known as zamindars — were granted immense power and wealth. The palaces built for them remain as marvelous examples of architectural excellence.
Every district in Bangladesh has its own historical and architectural landmarks, and Feni is no exception. One of the most prominent among them is the Pratappur Zamindar Bari.
Around 1860, Zamindar Ramkrishna Saha built this royal residence on approximately 800 shatak (about 27 acres) of land. The estate includes 13 ponds and 4 palatial buildings. The architecture and design of each palace and pond ghat are so intricate and beautiful that any visitor would be left amazed.
Unfortunately, due to lack of proper preservation, these remarkable structures are now on the brink of ruin. The palaces remain unprotected, overgrown with vegetation, and in poor condition—creating a haunted atmosphere. Inside the buildings, sunlight barely penetrates, making the interior pitch dark. Despite this, history enthusiasts and curious travelers visit the site every year.
A special three-day fair is held here during the Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh), attracting visitors not only from different parts of Bangladesh but also from India—since many of the descendants of Zamindar Ramkrishna Saha still live in both countries.
Currently, the estate is under the care of some local representatives. While it used to be heavily overgrown with dense vegetation, it has now been partially cleared. Still, jackals are commonly seen in the area, as if they now rule the place.
Inside the palace are mysterious underground tunnels and rooms with no access to light or air. These features continue to fascinate visitors to this day.
Each of the 13 ponds has its own ghat (steps), where the women of the zamindar’s household once bathed. While the ponds are not exceptionally large, they are deep and are now used for fish farming. Large fish can often be seen swimming near the surface.
Many stories and legends surround the Pratappur Zamindar Bari. It is said that in the past, walking past the palace wearing shoes would result in severe punishment. A judicial office once stood beside the palace, where people who refused or delayed paying rent (khajna) were summoned and penalized. These tales of oppression are still remembered by the locals.
The zamindar's family also founded Pratappur High School, which remains a reputed educational institution in Daganbhuiyan upazila.
My Trip to Pratappur
One day, my friends and I decided to visit the Pratappur Zamindar Bari. Since it's within our upazila, we set off on two motorbikes. In about 30 minutes, we arrived at the palace. Standing in front of this majestic structure, I felt transported into the depths of history. We spent a long time exploring, chatting, and capturing some memorable photographs.
If you love history and architecture, this place is a must-visit destination.
How to Get to Pratappur Zamindar Bari
To visit this historical palace from anywhere in Bangladesh, first travel to Feni and go to Mohipal, a well-known area in the town. From there, head to the Noakhali Bus Stand and board a Sugandha or any local bus going towards Daganbhuiyan Zero Point.
From Daganbhuiyan Zero Point, you can easily take a CNG auto-rickshaw or tuk-tuk to reach the Pratappur Zamindar Bari. The journey is straightforward and perfect for a day trip.
