The Diary Game Season 3 [ Thursday June 12th, 2025 ] Learning something new is a great experience
Greetings Steemit friends,
Learning something new is always a great feeling for any individual. Recently, I have been diving into design with Sass. The reason for learning this is for personal growth, which in turn helps me improve myself. Sometimes, it is important to understand what the people you are working with are doing. You don't need to be an expert, but having a basic understanding is helpful.
Learning is a way of taking one more step forward in your professional journey. That is why I mentioned it supports personal growth and career advancement. I believe people feel more relevant when they understand what is going on around them. That is one reason why everyone is learning tech, marketing, content creation, and more.
Platforms like Steemit have had a real impact on some of us in our professional lives. Many of us were curious about how a platform could reward people for writing content. I remember waiting for my first payout to confirm if it could be withdrawn. Like they always say, curiosity sparks the desire to learn what you do not yet understand.
Sass is something I have been seeing whenever I fetch work from the designer. Since it did not affect my part of the job directly, I had not paid much attention. But recently, I became curious and wanted a better understanding.
One thing that caught my attention was how any changes I made to the CSS file would get overridden once the designer fetched the project and ran the Sass command. I realized that we were facing a serious problem, and the only solution was for me to learn how to use Sass properly. Sometimes, you do not learn out of curiosity, but because you need to solve a problem.
At one point, I felt like I was messing up the designer’s work, and I was right. I was breaking and distorting their efforts because I had no understanding of Sass. It became necessary for me to learn it to ensure a smooth working relationship with the design team. This idea doesn’t only apply to tech. In every profession, a lack of knowledge in one area can slow down progress or hold back a project.
That is why it is important to regularly review your role and how you work. You might discover that you are the one slowing things down, and that could be the inspiration you need to learn something new. I see it as an opportunity worth grabbing. Just like many of us have done here on Steemit. We have grabbed the opportunity to learn new skills through the platform.
In my opinion, staying in the same spot can become boring. To make your career and professional life more interesting, you have to keep learning. When you learn something new, it gives you a feeling of purpose and awakens something inside. As I said, you do not need to become a pro, just understanding your environment at work is enough.
Today was a full workday for me. I got to the office before 7:30 a.m. and pushed myself to gain a basic understanding of Sass. I started by installing the plugin on VS Code. I then began redesigning one of my client’s websites using Sass. It was challenging, but I was ready because I had already planned my day. I was hungry but did not want to go out for food, so I asked one of the interns to get me bananas, which are one of my favorite fruits.
I kept working on the project and dealt with various Sass files. I learned how to manage different features by updating attributes in the respective Sass files. When the command is run, it generates the main Sass file and updates the main CSS file. That is when I finally understood what was happening every time I made a direct change to the CSS, and it got lost.
I felt accomplished by the end of the day. Even though I did not fully complete the redesign, I was proud of what I had learned so far. I closed from work and rushed home, only to discover there was no electricity. To avoid letting my phone and laptop die completely, I decided to quickly drop this reflection about the feeling and the necessity of learning something new before ending my day.
Cheers

It was nice reading through your new skill learning process. Indeed, we learn, unlearn and relearn everyday.
True
For me, this is essential for both personal and professional growth. I always say, we must regularly review the work we have done and ensure we are not the reason behind any poor performance in our workplace. Even when we are performing at our best, there is always something new to learn.
Let unlearning be the pathway to learning new skills.
I always tell my interns, doing one thing over and over does not necessarily make you a professional. Relearning helps deepen your understanding of a skill, and that often leads to better results.
I was happy with my progress, but I know I still need a lot more practice to familiarize myself with Sass.
