Voting delegates for FECAFOOT Regional General Assembly
Greeting Steemit Family
It’s when you get involved in some activities that you truly begin to understand how things actually work in a system. I took it upon myself to move to Bamenda during the lockdown to be part of the build-up for the upcoming FECAFOOT elections. As someone who loves promoting football in my community, I was privileged to be invited to take part in the process for the election of delegates to the Regional General Assembly.
As a delegate of the Divisional General Assembly for Mezam, it was our role to vote in the delegates for the Regional General Assembly. And honestly, this really opened my eyes to a lot of things in the system that I never used to notice.
In the past, it wasn’t like this, mainly because of the corrupt nature of the system. Just like in any election, you hear people say it has to start from the base. That is exactly how the FECAFOOT election is designed to work. But before, things were different. They would simply appoint the regional delegates to go and vote for the president of the federation.
Now, under Samuel Eto’o, who is currently the president of the federation, a lot has been put in place to ensure elections are done the right way. As I mentioned earlier, until you actually step into the system, you won’t really know what’s happening, and social media alone can easily mislead you. Over the past two years leading up to this year’s elections, I finally understood why some people have been stepping down from their positions in the federation.
Take, for example, the case of ghost teams. In the past, some teams existed only on paper. They were registered just to collect subsidies, but they did not even have real players. The money meant for these teams ended up in private pockets.
This time around, strict instructions were given. Every team must register its players digitally and obtain licenses. That way, the federation can track real, committed teams and allocate subsidies properly. This is just one of the measures taken to reduce corruption and streamline the system.
At the divisional level, only board members of properly registered teams are eligible to be delegates at the Divisional General Assembly. From there, they are the ones who vote in the delegates for the Regional General Assembly. As a delegate for Mezam, we voted in the president, 1st vice president, and 2nd vice president.
To give them more weight in their positions, we also voted them in as Regional delegates for Mezam. They now have the eligibility to vote for the National delegates, who will then move into the National General Assembly to elect the National President of the federation.
Going through this process really showed me how democratic elections are supposed to be. When you start from the base and build up, the results actually reflect the will of the people. I was excited to be part of it, and at the divisional level, we were satisfied with the delegates we chose to represent us at the Regional General Assembly.
Now, we are all hopeful for a better football season ahead. With the promises made by our Divisional president, we believe this season will have a higher standard than the last one.
Cheers
