Are you a Nurse by profession? I mean a certified Nurse and not the so-called Nurse who runs a chemist shop and treats people. It's a week dedicated to celebrate the Nurses worldwide. Think of how many lives are saved. Think of how many pregnant women are being delivered of their babies. Think of how many sick patients are given treatments. **We risk it all to protect and save lives.

Nursing is a profession that needs extra care as you're dealing with people's lives. It's just like sewing. Any wrong cut in the fabric spoils the clothes and can't he amended. Similarly, any wrong treatment or surgical operation can cause the life of another. I've been in this nursing profession for over 20 years and have been equipped with the act of caring and issuance of advice most especially to pregnant women.

Starting off as a nurse wasn't easy because it required a lot of things then in the 90s. It was my dream and ambition to help dying lives out there that's why I took a bold step to further my education after my SSCE. With no support, I've been hawking to provide myself income to study in school of nursing as my parents insisted I should end my education in SSCE. I wonder how my life would have been if I had followed such advice.

With God by my side, I was able to go through the four walls of Midwifery and also collected certificate as a midwife and a nurse. Even when discouragements weighed me down, I encouraged myself as I had no one to do that for me. I would read, read and read my eyes out just to be a Nurse and here I am — with the Legacy. A certified Nurse. As years passed, I've been working for the government and helping a lot of people in my field as I was into Gynaecological section where pregnant women are taken care of and delivered of their babies.

Life as a Nurse isn't so easy especially if you have a family to take care of. I'll be working on shifts, spend the whole day supervising and also taking charge of situations in the maternity ward as the Matron. If you know what a Nurse face everyday, you wouldn't do anything to raise her blood pressure. In my ward, I help women bring newborns to life. Imagine what it is like when the life of another person is on your hands. Imagine what it is like when you'll have to face excess blood spillage, faeces and the likes.

Even at that, we are caring to the point of death. Most times in my shift, I'll see women that have been badly handled by traditional birth attendants to the point that all they seek is their lives. It's not a time to lay blames for not being sensitive. It's a time to help and I do offer such help regardless of the damages caused. Most of them would come, bleeding excessively with their babies inside due to the traditional birth attendant's inability to help her patient in complicated issues.

During birth complications, It's always challenging but I don't run away from such if it's within my power to offer help. My work experience in that ward has earned me the respect of patients and workers. All the blessings channel to me by people is what I beg God to extend to my children. My daughter is on the ride to take this legacy with me. She is a student nurse who is dedicated and trained to care. Someday, she'll work like me.

She matriculated into this profession some months back and with God on her side, she'll be able to become a certified nurse, a legacy she has been dreaming to uphold. Are you a Nurse? You deserve better treatment because you deal with people's lives on a weekly basis. **You deserve to be honoured and loved by all. The Nursing anthem always remind me of a lot in this Nursing Profession. The lyrics to the Nursing anthem goes this way...

We are called to serve humanity. Endowed with the Act and SENSE of CARING
We are built on INTEGRITY and DISCIPLINE That Transcends through every generation
IMMACULATE and AMICABLE,We are the source of HOPE to ailing ones And the FOUNDATION for building a Healthy world

During my daughter's matriculation, she sung the nursing anthem with a lamp in her hands, showing how diligent she is in doing research day and night on how to save people's lives and treat the many illnesses people face. We treat while God heals. Just see the smile on her face as she sang this song with enthusiasm.

I can remember when my son would come back from school and ask of points for his debate — Nurses are better than teachers. It's true that teacher's teach people to become Nurses but the greater part of the teaching is done by students who burn the night to get a sense of what they are studying. Leaving the teaching aspect aside, we save lives as people get sick on a daily basis, women gets pregnant on a daily basis and people are faced with disorders. This is what most teachers themselves can't do because they are bent on the Theoritical aspect of this teaching.

It's Nurses week. Every Nurse deserves to be celebrated and honoured. Reflect back to the time you were helped by a Nurse. Guess what? I was gifted an Hollandis material by my patient for being a great Nurse. If you're aspiring to be a Nurse, let it be what you want to do and not a discipline you want to study because you feel you're intellectual enough in terms of academics and feel you can perform well in the field.

Being intellectual may not earn you interest and lastly, don't get pushed or forced by parents to take up this legacy otherwise, you'll spend the rest of your life regretting certain decisions.
