SLC-HomeRepairClub S23W1: Repairing of High Voltage 33 KV VCB.
Steemian Friends,
Today, I will participate in the Home Repair Club of @rmm31 and @imranhassan Sir in Week 01 of SLC-23. I am an electrical engineer. I will share with you the method of Repairing VCB in an electrical substation. Everyone will know how to fix VCBs of high-voltage lines and check them with a megger meter. Today's work is very important for high-voltage lines.
Today, I will show you how to solve a problem in my daily electrical work. I am an electrical engineer. I work in a 33 KV electrical substation. I will show how to Repair a VCB(Vacuum Circuit Breaker), an important device of the 33 KV substation, and measure it with a Megger machine. The job is very important for an electrical engineer. So, let's start Repairing VCB.
VCB is electrical substation switchgear. We have used MCB, MCCB, and ACB in low-voltage substations. Their function is to switch the power on/off and protect the equipment in case of an electrical fault. VCB acts as a protection device for switching off and on high-voltage lines. I have worked with this device, mostly in electrical substations. Today, I will show how to measure high voltage with a merger.
It is High Voltage 33 KV 2500 Ampere VCB
Step01:
First, I discuss the problem of VCB. VCB has three poles. These three poles are connected to three electricity phases. VCB requires a mega value of a minimum of 1 Giga ohms for high voltage lines at each pole. But the VCB I worked with had Mega Ohms. So, I set about Repairing the VCB. First, I clean the VCB poles. Accumulation of carbon-like dirt inside the poles reduces the mega velocity. So I first put the Pole three at 40 degrees for a few hours. Then, I clean my electrical team with NC thinner.
A few days ago, the VCB was destroyed in a major electrical accident on high-voltage lines
Step 02:
I prepare the pole of VCB clean and heat. Then, I do the following with the mega meter. Then, I measured the pole of VCB with a digital megger. First, I set up the Mega. The megger is fully rated at 5000 volts. I put the batteries in the mega meter. Then, I connected the red wire to the megger line and the black wire to the neutral. Below, I have shown the mega connection through the image.
After cleaning the VCB with NC thinner and giving a hit
Step 03:
Then, I connect the black wire to the body of the VCB and the head of the red wire to a part of the Pole. Then, I set the selector switch of the megger meter to the 5000-volt option. Thus, I connect the red wire to each end of the Pole.
Pole test of VCB by setup megger meter
Step 04:
Then I looked at the mega meter's display. There are more than 20 gigaohms at the end of each pole. As mentioned, if the value is above one giga ohms, the VCB can be connected to the high-voltage line. I've made a few videos below.

My tutorial today is very important for troubleshooting electrical problems in a substation. VCB faults are very common in electrical substations. A VCB is very expensive, so knowing how to fix a VCB is very important for an electrician or engineer. With my 10 years of electrical substation experience, I can now troubleshoot VCBs. If the value of the megger meter is below giga ohms on a high-voltage line, electrical connections cannot be made. A megger meter reading below giga ohms can cause major electrical accidents.
Summary:
The high-voltage 33 KV VCB could not be fixed in one day. A few days ago, after the VCB had an electrical fault, I took it out of the substation and cleaned the carbon first. Then, I hit the VCB for a few days because the mega value needed to be hit. Then I tested with the mega her. There is No electrical connection if the megger value is not more than one megaohm. So, the entire work is given a few days of pictures. My entire electrical team works with me.

Dear Sir, Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions. You will notice I have brought the VCB separately from the complete power unit. When I work inside the electrical substation I shut off the electrical lines and must use safety. I give utmost importance to safety while working in electrical substation. Gloves must be worn while working inside electrical substations. We also have some other safeties that we maintain and handle on electrical lines.
We use MCB at home. See it as a home appliance. But MCB is updated by ACB, ACB is updated by VCB. So I look at VCB as a home appliance and made a post about it. Of course your rules are correct. But according to your rules it will be a home appliance of electric low voltage line. I also understand that you want to prioritize electronics.
I will definitely follow your rules and create the next post. But knowing how to repair VCB is very important for an electrician so shared the post.
This is our indoor substation
This is our outdoor substation
Your post is very informative and well presented. It is really great to know about high-voltage electrical work like VCB repair. However, our home repair club mainly deals with home repair and maintenance-related issues. So if you post about home electrical repairs in the future, it will be better aligned with the main purpose of the club. For example, you can discuss topics like troubleshooting home appliances like fans, irons, or rice cookers; troubleshooting electrical wiring in the home; repairing switches and sockets; fixing home appliances; changing LED or tube lights; and maintaining inverters or stabilisers. Hopefully, we will see something like this in the next post.
