Mathematics lesson with Ubong-Abasi, my landlord's son// 05-07-2025.

It was another lesson day on Saturday July 5, and I was excited to continue my weekly lesson with Ubong-Abasi, the son of my landlord, Mr. Christopher. I had been tutoring Ubong-Abasi for a while now, and it had been a remarkable journey.

As I had shared on my Steemit blog, Mr. Christopher had initially approached me to take Ubong-Abasi under my wing because he was performing below expectations academically. But since we started our lessons, I had witnessed tremendous improvement in the young boy.

On this particular Saturday, July 5th, our lesson was focused on mathematics, specifically subtraction of numbers. I knew that Ubong-Abasi needed a clearer understanding of this concept, so I decided to use a tabular form to explain the tens and units. I wrote on the blackboard:

TU
79
-33

Using this visual aid, I broke down the concept of subtraction into simpler, manageable parts. Ubong-Abasi listened intently, his eyes wide with curiosity. As I explained each step, he nodded, and I could see the understanding dawn on his face.

After the explanation, I handed him his mathematics textbook, and we worked through the exercises together. To my delight, Ubong-Abasi was able to solve every single problem on addition and subtraction of numbers. His confidence grew with each correct answer, and I felt a sense of pride and fulfillment.

Just then, Mr. Christopher walked outside from his sitting room, a warm smile on his face. He stood at a distance, watching his son solve mathematics problems on the blackboard with ease. I could sense his gratitude and appreciation for the progress Ubong-Abasi had made.

As the lesson came to a close, Mr. Christopher approached me, his eyes shining with tears. "Thank you," he said, his voice choked with emotion. "I was afraid my son would struggle academically, but you've shown me that he's intelligent and capable. It's just that the teaching techniques at his school weren't working for him." I smiled, feeling grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in Ubong-Abasi's life. "It's all part of being a teacher, I said humbly. "I'm just glad I could help."

As I packed up my things to leave, Mr. Christopher handed me a small envelope. "A small token of appreciation," he said with a smile. I opened the envelope to find a generous gift inside. But more than the monetary reward, I felt enriched by the knowledge that I had made a positive impact on Ubong-Abasi's life. As a teacher, there's no greater joy than seeing your students grow and thrive.

As I walked away to my house, I felt grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Ubong-Abasi's educational journey. It was a reminder that, as teachers, we have the power to shape young minds and prepare them for a brighter future.
