It is an evergreen tree. It usually grows up to 5–10 meters tall. The leaves are long, 8–15 cm, with 3 clear veins on the sides. The color of the leaves is green and has a light aroma inside. The bark of the tree is light brown, fragrant. The flowers are small and white or light yellow. The fruits are small, purple-black oval. It is used to enhance the taste and aroma of rice, biryani, meat, pulses, curries, etc.

Increases digestion. Reduces gas and acidity. Useful in cold, cough and flu. As an antioxidant, it makes the body resistant to diseases. Helps control diabetes. The oil inside the leaves is used for perfume and medicinal purposes.

Bay leaves contain vitamins A, C, calcium, iron, magnesium, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. Dried bay leaves are used before cooking. The leaves cannot be chewed directly, because the taste is very strong. Many people mistakenly think of it as Bay Leaf (Laurus nobilis), but Indian bay leaves are a different species.
