How do wars affect the lives of ordinary people including children?

War in the first place means a state of fight, conflict or unrest between ethnic groups, states or countries with the use of weapons like guns, knives, firearms, missiles etc. War always involves killing and the destruction of property.
War has a devastating effect on the lives of ordinary people including children and some of the effects are:

• It leads to the killing of ordinary people and children.
• Homes and properties are destroyed
• War brings about displacement
• It brings hardship and sadness as sources of income are also affected.
• It makes ordinary people and children lose their loved ones and makes them live in fear.
• It affects the education of children
• It affects their mental health as they see how their loved ones are brutally killed.

Tell us about one historical war that had a major impact on the world.

One of the historical wars that had a major impact on the world is the Second World War which was championed by Adolf Hitler of Germany in the year 1939. This war was terrible because it involved many countries. Some of the impacts created by the war are:

• The destruction significantly affected economic activities around the world.
• It brought the rise of the United Nations organisation to foster unity and prevent future conflicts.
• It causes the death of both ordinary people, children and military officers.
• The war leads to advancement in medicine due to the types of injuries sustained.
• The anti racist nature of the war gave rise to political consciousness among Africans.
• After the war, many countries saw the need to advance weapons of war. For example nuclear weapons.

The following are tips to keep ourselves safe during wars:

• Look for a safe place to hide and lock the doors.
• Stay quiet not to attract attention
• Switch off all lights so that you will not be seen.
• Call the emergency rescue team and stay informed
• Ensure that there is a food and water supply.
• You need a first aid box and skills to handle minor injuries.
• Avoid rumours

How can we stop wars and promote peace among the nations?

We can stop wars and promote peace through:

• Organising and presenting a lecture or talk on peaceful and harmonious living amongst the citizens and with other nations.
• Sensitising citizens about the negative impact of war.
• Forgiving each other and creating allowances for wrongs.
• Patience with each other.
• Respect for each other.
• We must learn to resolve conflicts through peaceful resolutions.
• Prayers to God Almighty.
• Seeking forgiveness when you did wrong.
