Komolapur Railway Station, Dhaka
Assalamu Alaikum everyone. Today I came to participate in this wonderful Contest #21 - Become a local guide by sharing the places you visit often! | Winners of Contest #20 contest organized by my respected brother and Steem-Atlas Ambassador @mohammadfaisal.
I hope you all are well by the grace of Allah I am also well. Today I will review our biggest railway station in Bangladesh. It is located in Kamalapur, Dhaka Division, Bangladesh. Here I will show the pictures of each place and all the steps on how to buy train tickets. So in the beginning I went to Kamalapur railway station from where passengers wait for the train to depart.
The train journey basically starts from here. Trains from all platforms arrive here and this is where passengers sit and wait to find their own train compartment. From here onwards I went directly to the main station building. The main building of Kamalapur Railway Station is a unique architectural landmark of Bangladesh. It was built in 1968 and was designed by Doxiadis Associates.
The building has a specially designed roof that looks more like a pavilion and is considered one of the most impressive pieces of architecture in Dhaka. Its design is modern and aesthetic, especially the dome-shaped structure of the roof and the wide platforms give it a unique beauty. It looks more charming in the evening and night when the lighting system is turned on. I have added its location code below.
I went a little further and there is a passenger tent. It is used for passenger service. Canopies are provided to prevent passengers from getting drenched in the hot sun or rain while waiting for the train. With the canopies, passengers waiting on the platform are relieved of shade during hot weather and can stand in a dry place during rainy days.

Then you have to buy the ticket. For that you have to go to the ticket counter. You will see different lines to go to the ticket counter which is called ticket counter gate. Gates are used to ensure orderly queuing of passengers to reduce chaos and jostling. Many try to enter the station platform without buying a ticket. Due to the presence of gates, only ticketed passengers can go to certain places. Having a counter gate enables proper queuing of passengers and makes the ticketing process faster and easier. I took this picture while passing by.
We entered inside the thin line where there is a huge space for passengers to wait. Basically every day thousands of passengers come to buy tickets especially during holidays, Eid or other festivals. Having a large space allows passengers to wait comfortably and makes crowd management easier.
If the space is small, the passengers will stand in piles which can cause chaos. The large space makes the process of queuing and buying tickets easier. Wide space is kept so that the passengers do not suffer if they have to wait for a long time. Many come with bags or luggage so they need to have enough space for their comfort.
Then I went to the ticket counter where tickets of different classes are purchased. There are also small lanes to stand in line. Kamalapur railway station has designated counters for buying Shobhan Chair, Shobhan and Shulab class tickets of intercity trains. They usually serve passengers through separate lines and counters.
Shobhan Chair is a coach with air-conditioned (non-AC) seating. It is a bit more comfortable than the normal ornamental class. Sobhon Chair class tickets are quite popular even though they are relatively expensive.
Shobhan class is the most popular and medium quality coach for general passengers. It has normal seats as well as comfortable wooden or cushioned seats. Due to the large number of passengers in this class, separate counters are kept for ticketing.
Shulab class is the cheapest train ticket. It is basically a general class coach, where seats are not allocated and many travel standing. There are separate counters for Shulabh class passengers so that general passengers can get tickets easily. Generally this class tickets are easily available but crowded during festivals.
Also next to it is a large screen display of train departure and arrival times from Dhaka. Scheduled train departure time, platform number, delay information etc. are displayed on the screen so that passengers can easily get the necessary information. It does not have to repeatedly go to the counter or information center to ask. Sometimes the train may leave later than the scheduled time. Live updates are shown on the big screen, so passengers can know in advance if there will be a delay and prepare accordingly.
So this was part of the counter inside the station. Now I went to the front of the platform where there are several platforms. Here are some support centers of Railway Security Force. Many passengers flock to buy tickets, especially on holidays or during Eid-Puja. Security forces help to keep the lines straight and avoid chaos. Some criminals may sell fake tickets or try to cheat. Security forces monitor these activities and prevent fraud. Many times passengers are confused or want information. They get necessary guidance from RNB Help Center.
So now to board the train we have to go a little further where we have to wait for a while and there is a train crossing. Train Crossing Place is placed on the platform mainly to ensure safe movement of passengers and staff. This place looks strange to many as it is slightly different from other parts of the platform and has to cross the train line directly. As big stations like Kamalapur have multiple platforms, passengers have to move from one platform to another. Although overbridges are used, Train Crossing Place serves as an easier route for the elderly, sick and people carrying heavy luggage.
Now we will go to the end of the train line where the line ends. It acts as a stop signal or buffer stop that informs the train drivers that the line has ended here and there is no room to go any further. This is important so that drivers can stay alert and the train does not roll forward unexpectedly.
Sometimes if the brakes don't work properly or the driver makes a mistake, the train can move forward too much. Red planks and accompanying buffer stops (barriers made of iron) stop trains and prevent accidents. It is a kind of end limit indicator which helps to control the speed of the train.
The red board at the end of the Kamalapur railway station is mainly used to indicate the end of the railway line to prevent accidents and facilitate train operation. It serves as an important sign for drivers, railway staff and passengers.
It is a hub for inter-city, mail and local trains where thousands of passengers travel daily. There are eight platforms. There are huge ticket counters, electronic schedule screens, passenger canopies, security forces. It is the rail communication hub of Dhaka and one of the most important transport hubs in the country. I have shown its google map location and steem-atlas location.
