What is ESSI?
ESSI is a government-run social insurance program established under the Social Security Ordinance, 1965. It Operates under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Workers Welfare Board (WWB) nd the Provincial Social Security Institution (PESSI) ensuring that Industrial, Commercial nd other registered Employees receive essential Benefits in times of Need. Provides medical care facilities and different cash benefits to secured workers and their dependents.
Historical Background:
- The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ESSI came into being on the break-up of one unit in July 1970. Governed by a Governing Body headad by the Provincial Minister for Labour, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A self-sustaining body without any financial aid from the Provincial or Federal Government. Meets all expanditures from monthly contribution payable by the establishments covered under the abve said ordinance, @ 6% of the wages of their employees.
- ESSI was introduced to Comply with International Labour Organization (ILO) standards, ensuring workers' rights to health nd finencial Security.
- Initially limited to industrial workers, it has now expanded to inclode shop employees, private sector Workers nd even some informal labor sectors.
- In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ESSI has major Centers in Peshawar, Swat, Haripur, Mardan, Abbottabad, Kohat, and Bannu with hospitals nd dispensaries catering to thousands of insured Workers.
