INTRODUCTION

Eradicate Polio, Save The Kids!

Today, Nigeria joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Polio Day, a global awareness day dedicated to the eradication of poliomyelitis (commonly called polio). Every 24th of October, health organizations, government bodies, and individuals unite to remind the world that the fight against polio is not yet over. The celebration in Nigeria serves as a reflection on how far the country has come and a call to continue protecting children from this disabling disease.

What is Polio?

Polio, short for poliomyelitis, is a highly infectious viral disease caused by the poliovirus. It primarily affects young children under the age of five. The virus attacks the nervous system and can cause irreversible paralysis within hours. In severe cases, it can even lead to death when the muscles responsible for breathing become paralyzed.

How Polio is Contacted

Polio spreads mainly through person-to-person contact, especially in areas with poor sanitation. The virus enters the body through the mouth, usually from contaminated water or food. It multiplies in the intestines and then attacks the nervous system. Children are the most vulnerable, particularly those who live in environments where hygiene is poor or where vaccination coverage is low.

How Polio Affects Nigerian Children

Polio has long been a major public health challenge in Nigeria. In the past, thousands of children were left crippled for life due to the disease. A child who survives polio may never walk again, and this not only affects the child but also places emotional and financial strain on families. Although Nigeria was declared polio-free in 2020, the presence of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) in some regions shows that the fight is not completely over. Some children, especially in remote areas, still miss out on vital vaccination campaigns, making them vulnerable to infection

How Polio is Treated

According to health experts sadly, there is no cure for polio once infection occurs. Treatment mainly focuses on managing symptoms — such as physiotherapy to restore muscle function, and pain relief. Once paralysis sets in, it is usually permanent. This is why prevention through vaccination remains the most powerful tool in eradicating the disease.

Preventative Measures Against Polio

Health experts say the most effective way to prevent polio is through immunization. The oral polio vaccine (OPV) and the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) help protect children from the virus. Every child should receive all doses as part of their routine immunization schedule. Other preventive steps include promoting good hygiene, providing access to clean water, and encouraging proper sanitation. Regular public health campaigns and awareness programs also play an important role in reaching unvaccinated communities.

World Polio Day is not just a celebration — it is a reminder that a world free of polio is possible if we continue to take action. Parents should ensure that their children receive all recommended vaccines. Communities must support health workers who go from house to house during immunization drives. Together, we can protect the next generation from paralysis and keep Nigeria polio-free forever.

Have you seen any World Polio Day activities in your area today? How does your community promote child immunization and hygiene? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comment section — let’s continue spreading awareness and working toward a polio-free Nigeria.
