Covering The Just Concluded Abia Governor's Unity Secondary school games
The re-introduction of sport games into the public secondary schools in the state is gaining much support from sports parents, teachers and other sports lovers. During my years in the secondary, sports were a major part of the school curricular activities. As the years go bye, the attention given to it went down as it was regarded not necessary. Now under the current administration, sport games is been given the needed attention it deserves in my state secondary school system.
Secondary Schools from the 17 local government were mobilized to participate in the games organized by state government. Although the secondary schools that participated in the games could not feature in all the games, they were at least able to feature in one or two games.
This year's games has come to a close and below are some games that were outlined:
The weight lifting
The high jump
Javelin
The 100, 200 and 800 metres race
These are some of the games I was able to capture alongside other one that I could not cover. This is so because these games were the that gained much attention by schools participation.
This year's event has come to a close and some schools from different local government came tops in the activities that they participated. Here is a rundown of the winners and their respective number of medals won as represented in by their local government areas:
School LGA | Type of medal | No. Of Medal | Total |
---|
Ikwuano LGA | Gold 45 | Silver 45 | Bronze 41 | 131 |
---|
Umunneochi LGA | 26 | 21 | 27 | 74 |
---|
Umahia North | 24 | 10 | 17 | 53 |
---|
From the table, Ikwuano Local government took the first position as they gathered a whooping 131 medals to be at the top.
Umunneochi Local government occupy the second position as they amassed 74 medals. The third position is taken by the Umahia North local government as they were able to gather 53 medals to themselves.
It would be recalled that, Umahia North took were winner of the 1st edition of the secondary school unity games. Surprisingly, they could not hold the position in this second edition of the game as it now occupied by Ikwuano Local government.
The pupils put their best in the game. Those who could not come to the top three in this year's edition would hoping to secure in the next edition of the unity games.
Thanks to the Governor for coming out with this initiative. This idea has revived the sporting games that has been almost forgotten in the public schools. It would be a platform where young talented athletes would be discovered and channeled to the global athletic arena. Hopefully, the games would make a return next year.
