"Weekly Contest 42 || The Diary Game || How I spent my day."
Morning
I woke up this morning when the cock crow, not even my phone alarm, I don’t know why it didn’t ring but maybe I forgot to charge it. The way and manner the sunlight was sneaking under the curtain like it was peeping like a spy to see if I’m awake and not sleeping, it made me feel warm on my face. I sat up slowly, rubbed my eyes and whispered gratias Deo because that’s how I like to begin, thanks to God for another day. My teeth got brushed in a rush, I washed my face with cold water and that splash chased away every small sleep still hiding in my eyes. I felt lighter then. I went into the kitchen corner, fried one egg that looked small but it was enough, and dropped two slices of bread in the pan to toast a bit. Tea was already steaming in the cup, simple breakfast but I like it. That bread I bought for ₦500 (0.18 STEEM) yesterday, I still remember the shop lady smiling when she gave it to me. After I ate, I cleaned the room, swept under the bed, folded some clothes that had been thrown anywhere, then I pulled my bedsheet neat because I can’t stand it rough. Around nine I grabbed my phone and opened Steemit. Some people had commented on my last post, seeing their words gave me a quiet smile, it felt like someone patting my shoulder saying well done.
Afternoon
The morning was not busy but I still felt like I did something. Time moved faster than I noticed, and the sun was already high up, heating everywhere. By afternoon hunger came knocking again, it never forgets. I didn’t cook because I was feeling a bit lazy, so I went to mama-put. She served me rice and beans with stew that had smoke taste, the pepper was plenty and made me sweat on my forehead. It was delicious anyway. The plate cost me ₦1,200 (0.45 STEEM), and I also bought one pure water for ₦50 (0.02 STEEM) very chilled one to cool my tongue down. After eating I felt so heavy I had to lay on the floor a bit, just a short nap while my phone played Afrobeat softly in the background. I woke up not long but it felt like hours.
I came back to meet the clothes I left at home, they were staring at me, waiting for me to wash them, and I couldn’t avoid it any longer. I filled the basin with water, and then added "klin" detergent, and started washing. It took energy but I kept going, rinse, rinse, then carried them outside to hang on the line. The sun was still hot so I knew they will dry quickly. My younger cousin came with his homework later, some small math problems he was confused about. We sat together, I explained slowly, he nodded but sometimes he acted like he understood when he didn’t. I corrected him gently, until he got it right. That made him smile, and that smile was like payment to me. Scientia est potentia I told myself in silence, knowledge is power. Helping him made me feel useful.
Evening
Evening rolled in quietly, I didn’t even notice how fast the day went. Around six I was sitting outside with some neighbors. The air was cool, the sky soft with orange fading. We talked about football matches, laughed at old stories, sometimes argued small but in a friendly way. It felt nice, people connecting over nothing serious. Night food came simple, garri with groundnut and cold water, I didn’t want heavy meal. It cost me just ₦300 (0.11 STEEM) from the shop nearby. As I chewed I was thinking about tomorrow, what I might need to do. After dinner I took my pen and small book, wrote down a list of tiny plans for the next day, like things to buy and things to finish. I also opened one storybook I keep near the bed, read a few pages, the words made me feel calm.
By the time the clock touched ten, my eyelids were already heavy, I couldn’t keep them open too long. I lay down, stretched a bit on the bed, and whispered softly pax in corde meo which means peace in my heart. That was the last thing I remember before sleep carried me away.
So that’s how my day was, split into three like the sun does—mane, meridies, noctis. From simple breakfast, to rice and beans under the hot noon, to garri at night. From cleaning the room, washing clothes, helping cousin with math, chatting with neighbors, each small activity building up the day. Maybe nothing too special, but still mine.
