Otor Mboro or Grated Unripe Banana Porridge is a good I came to love ever since I came to my present city of residence. It was never my thing before then and I never even knew it existed. I first ate it 3 years ago when I learned that banana can be grated and cooked as porridge. What I knew previously was grated water yam and cocoyam porridge. Learning of this, I decided to give it a trial then and it came out good and the taste was awesome!

Since then, I have been preparing it though sparingly because each time I remember to prepare it, my kids won't agree to it because they don't like it that much. However, whenever I prepare it, I do prepare it in small quantity such that if won't join in the eating, I can finish it with my husband. But it usually turns out that they always in the eating whenever I decide to prepare it.

While in the field ministry last week, I saw that spacie of banana that is used for the grated banana porridge and I was moved to buy it. Good enough, I was with my both kids then and they were happy that I was going to prepare it. In fact, since this year, I haven't prepared it. They even promised to grate it in a bit to encourage me to buy it. Well, it was later bought.

On a normal circumstances, the ingredients that can be used to prepare this dish are listed as follows

  • Banana
  • Ice fish, or roasted ice fish, dry fish and any other one of your choice
  • Meat of your choice, cut into pieces
  • Shell Periwinkle
  • Crayfish
  • Palm oil
  • Seasoning cubes
Natural spices like ginger, tumeric and so on
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Onions and any other thing

But I was buoyant that day as to buy all of those stuffs. I had to buy the ones I could afford. The following was used to prepare 2 bunches of banana of about 15 fingers

  • Shell Periwinkle
  • Crayfish
  • Palm oil
  • Seasoning cubes
  • Salt
  • Spices
  • Scent leaves
  • Onions

We couldn't prepare it that day and so I had to preserve some of the ingredients.

After 2 days, we prepared it. My kids grated the banana as promised. One was peeling and the other was grating.

Then, the periwinkle was thoroughly washed and set aside

The fresh pepper and crayfish were pounded and set aside

The scent leaves were gotten from my garden, washed and shredded and set aside.

Then my husband helped to make firewood fire because I wanted to prepare it with it. The cooking began in Ernest.

  • I placed an empty pot on fire, then added palm oil

  • After it hits a little, I added onions and salt to it

  • Allowed it to fry a little and to release the flavour

  • I added the pounded crayfish and pepper and all other spices

  • I then added boiled water, the quantity that could be enough to properly cook the porridge

  • I made sure that every ingredients were in order. Then I covered and allowed the water to boil well and mix well with the ingredients.

  • I then mixed salt, pepper and seasoning cubes to the grated banana and began cutting the grated banana in small sizes and putting them inside the boiling pot. I had to be patient to be able to cut them all in small quantities.

  • Next, I ensured that the water covered the banana and I covered it to cook a little

  • Then I used spatula to separate the balls so that they don't stick together.

  • I covered a d cooked on low heat so that it doesn't burn until it was thoroughly cooked. I turned and ensured that the ingredients are properly incorporated.

  • The last thing was the scent leaves. I added it, turned and after a little while, I brought it down, it was ready.

Note that it is best eaten as soon as it is brought down from the fire. Additionally, it is best spread inside tray so that it could cool down quickly.

It is also best eaten together in the same serving and with bare hands instead of with spoons. But I didn't do all these. I quickly served it separately to everyone and we ate with spoons.

The taste was awesome! Do you know that everyone requested for more and the pot was empty before they could rest.

It was tasty and nutritious. It is best as it took ti.e before I prepared it again in the house. Imagine the kind of reception that was given to it! We can't wait have it again and again. Just that the ricing Prices are really affecting everyone and everything. But, I will an for it again.

As for the amount used in preparing it, it took me 4000 naira (20 steem) to prepare. But it was worth it. However, before, the price of that banana used to be very low. You can buy ones as low as 300 naira (1.5 steem) but not now again.
