"Protected animals in my country....(Nigeria)"
Savanna Elephant
In Nigeria, I am based in Kaduna State, which is in the northern part of Nigeria. In my state, we have the savanna elephant as a protected animal.
Savanna Elephant is less populated in Kaduna, and the main place where the animal can be found in Kaduna is the Kamuku National Park, which is the biggest park in northern Nigeria. Savanna Elephant matters a lot in Kaduna, as it brings attention to other animals in Nigeria.
Threats
Savanna Elephant is being faced with the following threats in Kaduna State, Nigeria.
Poaching: It is mainly for ivory; elephants are mostly targeted in and around the national parks.
Fragmentation and Habitat loss: Deforestation and agricultural expansion reduce safe migratory corridors for savanna elephants.
Insecurity: Illegal grazing, banditry, and insufficient guardian enforcement in Kamuku National Park is a hindrance to this Animal.
Climate change and Flooding: The increase in food events threatens the survival of savanna elephants.
Legal Status and Protection
This animal is protected by the federal government of Nigeria under the national park service law and the Kamuku designated as IUCN.
Also, it is under the Endangered Species Control of International Trade and Traffic Act of 2016, which, if anyone is cut, the person would have to pay a fine of about ₦500,000.
Also, support comes from the national strategy for combating wildlife and forest crime.
