Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is an important part of our body that contains a group of muscles, ligaments and tissues that protect the internal organs in the pelvic region, and also support them. Pelvic floor functions include protecting the internal organs, preventing incontinence like urinary or fecal incontinence, supporting childbirth, and many more.

Main Muscles of the Pelvic Floor

The 2 main muscles of the pelvic floor play an important role: the levator ani and the coccygeus muscle. The levator ani is made of 3 muscles: pubococcygeus, iliococcygeus, and puborectalis. Some other supporting muscles help in performing functions, the piriformis and the obturator internus muscle. In case of weakness in these muscles can lead to various dysfunctions that need proper physiotherapy and medical management to cure.

Types of Pelvic Floor

These are the main types of pelvic floor that are divided based on muscle tone after disease or dysfunction.

  • Hypertonic Pelvic Floor
In this type of pelvic floor, the tone of pelvic muscles increases, which increases muscle tension and tightness, leading to diseases like constipation, incomplete voiding, pelvic region pain, and an increase in urine frequency.

  • Hypotonic Pelvic Floor
In a hypotonic pelvic floor, muscle tone reduces, leading to weak or relaxed muscles and causing diseases like organ prolapse, incontinence, such as urinary and fecal.

  • Normal Pelvic Floor
In this type of pelvic, there is normal tone of muscles which allows normal functioning of the pelvic floor, like normal bladder and bowel movements. Muscles maintain strength and flexibility.

Causes

I will share only 2 causes of pelvic floor muscles dysfunction, one of the main cause in female is childbirth. After childbirth pelvic floor changes it size suddenly and leads to muscles weakness. Secondly is the aging, with age our muscles loose strength and become weak that's the reason most of the old age patient, not in female but also male as well, suffer from constipation and incontinence.

Physical Therapy Intervention for Pelvic floor

The most common and effective treatment protocol used in physiotherapy for Pelvic Floor weakness or dysfunction are Kegel exercises. These are the best to regain normal strength and functioning of pelvic floor muscles. In this week challenge we will add few Kegel exercises to perform and improve your pelvic function. These are hip bridging exercise, glutes squeeze, pelvic tilt and ball squeezing.

Pelvic Tilt

Try to move your pelvic upward

Glutes and Abductors Squeeze

Abductors Squeeze by placing a ball or cushion between knees

Glutes squeezing and hold each for 5 to 10 seconds.

Hip Bridging Exercise

For strengthening of lower back muscles

Challenge

I discovered that some women never fully recover after childbirth. Read this post where women shared some of their experiences after childbirth. The shifting pelvis, frequent farts and affected bladder and bowel movements.

This particular contest is a brilliant. Comes in handy for mothers and female who intend to conceive in future.
