What makes a person or an object fall off the clip is because an external force met it up there, unbalancing it and pulling it away; an external force stronger than the body mass shifted it away from the surface. This idea is from a high school class in physics on stable or unstable equilibrium.

BALANCE

1000011933.jpg1000011937.jpg
From this idea, I would define

Balance is the ability of the body to remain in a state where its body is not tilted to any edge but centralised to ensure stability, whether in a static or dynamic position.

For the body to maintain balance, sensory cells have to respond and give feedback to that, from a sensory input to central nervous system integration and then to motor output, helping us respond to the posture of our body. For balance to be possible, 3 systems send signals to the brain, each with its difference.

A body can maintain balance while in a state of rest and also in movement; this gives rise to balance in two parts, which are static balance and dynamic balance (running and jumping with stability).

COORDINATION

1000012861.jpg

When we say someone is coordinating, it means every action taken is accurate. Most people use "not coordinating" to explain when someone is insane.

With this, I would define coordination as the ability to synchronise the actions of different people to carry out complex movement smoothly, adequately and efficiently. For the body not to witness any slump in any daily activity like reading, writing and walking, the body must be coordinated.

  • Motor control – sending precise signals to the muscle through the brain parts, cortex and cerebellum, for executing proper movement – shows coordination.
  • Timing is like a sequence at which this movement is carried out so that no movement is mistaken for another, especially while dancing; a person who is not coordinating may not dance rhythmically.
  • Rhythm, a consistent pattern of movement, is movement; the arm has a rhythm of movement when swimming and cycling.

These three components are collectively needed for coordination to take place.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

1000012866.jpg

Pathophysiology: The cerebellum has sensory inputs (vestibular for head movement, visual for the eyes, and proprioceptive or somatosensory, which deals with muscles, joints, etc.) to activate motor control, timing, and rhythm. Any damage to the cerebellum, due to cases like stroke, tumours, alcohol toxicity, or genetic disorder, disrupts this sensory response and integration, leading to impaired motor control. That is why you can see a drunkard's irregular pattern of movement.

PATIENT HISTORY, CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS

1000012862.jpg

One major cause of balance impairment that I know, and it's common, is stroke, and it happens when the blood flow to the brain is interrupted. When this happens, the region of the brain responsible for balance, such as the cerebellum or motor cortex, gets damaged, disrupting sensory integration. This results in difficulty in moving some parts of the body, and in most cases, walking becomes impossible.

  • Patient: Nsisong Robert (me)

  • Gender: Male

  • Complaint: Frequent stumbling, difficulty walking straight, and occasional falls over the past 6 months.

  • Medical History: Just worsening fatigue and occasional muscle weakness

  • Symptoms: I report unsteadiness and imbalance when running or dribbling, especially on uneven surfaces. I feel tired and up in the air; it actually worsens when I am fatigued or in hot weather.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

1000012867.jpg

In my case I won't say I have a balance impairment, but I will be practising a few physiotherapy exercises to improve my balance and coordination. Everything I did is in the video below. I actually practised a sidewalk walk, a back walk and a single-leg squat. I really enjoyed the single-leg squat, as the pressure of maintaining balance was on me, and I witnessed a vibration in my foot. I think as a footballer this will definitely help. Forgot to mention that I improvise the straight-rod walkway into a straight way to keep myself walking in a straight line.

Task 1 (1.25/1.5)You have shared a great knowledge about balance, its types, coordination, the 3 main components and pathophysiology. I am glad that you have improved significantly this week but it would be better if you add bit explanation of types of balance.
Task 2 (2/2.5)It would be better to explain the cause in detail, like if there is a trauma or accident which system will be affected? Like you share the history so you have to mention which system will be affected with it. Nervous system issue can affect your brain activities, show symptoms like difficult walking, unable to maintain balance and many more. But proper care and management can cure the impairment and improve balance.
Task 3 (6/6)You chose the good exercises to improve your balance and coordination. Because on the back walk and side walk we have to be focused, try to maintain that posture, prevent falls, and send signals to the brain to keep the pace while walking. You did very well. I appreciate your efforts. Best of luck.
