Measles is highly contagious, health department reminds people of mandatory immunization.

The Sumenep Regency Health Office stated that measles is not a common disease, but rather a highly contagious one. Therefore, immunization is a mandatory preventive measure.

Data compiled by the Sumenep Health Office indicates that from January to August 28, 2025, there were 2,370 suspected cases of measles. Of these, 20 people died and 2,277 patients recovered.

The Head of the Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Division of the Sumenep Health Office, Achmad Syamsuri, stated that the most cases were found in Kalianget, Pandean, and Batang-Batang Districts. The local government even declared an Extraordinary Event (KLB) on August 25, 2025.

"Measles is a highly contagious disease. One person can infect 12 to 18 people," he said in a conversation with Pro 3 RRI on Thursday (August 28, 2025).

The Health Office, along with the Ministry of Health, WHO, and UNICEF, is currently conducting mass immunizations at 26 community health centers in Sumenep. The target population is children aged 9 months to 7 years.

He explained that during the COVID-19 pandemic, routine immunization coverage decreased due to activity restrictions. This has resulted in an increase in measles cases in Sumenep this year.

"People still consider measles or tampek to be a common disease. However, it is highly contagious," he said.

He urged the community to work together to ensure the success of mass immunization programs to protect children. In addition to immunization, prevention also includes consuming a balanced, nutritious diet and adopting a clean and healthy lifestyle.
