A culture of tolerance is one of the important keys to maintaining harmony and peace in Indonesian society.

With its abundant ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity, Indonesia

has a long history of living harmoniously. This culture of tolerance is reflected in the spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which means "Unity in Diversity."

However, in the last decade, various incidents of intolerance have continued to occur frequently, testing the strength of national values. Therefore, tolerance education must begin at an early age.

"Children need to be taught to appreciate differences and understand that diversity is a strength, not a weakness," said Leonardo, an arts practitioner in Sibolga, at the Teras Pro2 event on Saturday (May 25, 2024).

According to him, the role of families, schools, and the media is crucial in fostering an inclusive mindset.

A culture of tolerance is not only embodied in education and dialogue, but also in government policies.

"The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Education and Culture, is expected to continue promoting programs that support tolerance and diversity, to create a learning environment that values differences," said Leonardo.

Furthermore, technology and social media are also important tools in spreading messages of tolerance. Social campaigns on digital media that highlight inspiring stories about harmony and cooperation between community groups have received a positive response from various groups.

However, Leonardo said, challenges in fostering a culture of tolerance remain. The spread of fake news and hate speech on social media often triggers conflict and exacerbates prejudice. Therefore, digital literacy and critical public awareness need to be continuously improved.

"All parties agree that building a culture of tolerance is a shared responsibility. By mutually respecting and understanding differences, Indonesian society can continue to maintain harmony and peace within diversity," he emphasized.

Through joint efforts from various elements of society, it is hoped that a culture of tolerance will continue to take root and become a strong foundation for national and state life.

"As the saying goes, a sturdy house is one built on a strong foundation. Likewise, a strong nation is one built on the values of tolerance and unity," he concluded.
