Following Up on Aceh's Participation in the Eastern Economic Forum, Acehnese Officials Meet with the Indonesian Ambassador to Russia

Moscow — The Wali Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, His Excellency Tgk. Malik Mahmud Al-Haythar, met with the Indonesian Ambassador to the Russian Federation, H.E. Jose Tavares, at the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Moscow on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. local time.

Head of Cooperation and Public Relations for the Wali Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, Zulfikar Idris, stated that the meeting was a follow-up to Aceh's participation in the 2025 Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok, September 3–6.

During the meeting, the Wali Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam reiterated Aceh's role in the largest economic forum in the Far East. He was one of the speakers at a session titled "The Greater Eurasian Partnership: New Paradigms for the Continent's Development" at the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) on Thursday, September 4, 2025.

The strategic discussion was also attended by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, Mongolian Deputy Prime Minister Sainbuyan Amarsaikhan, as well as high-level representatives from Laos, the SCO, the UN ESCAP, and Kazakhstan.

"Aceh is Indonesia's western gateway. Connectivity, sustainable investment, and strengthening entrepreneurship are key to contributing more broadly to the regional value chain," said Wali Nanggroe during a meeting in Moscow, accompanied by Special Staff Dr. Muhammad Raviq.

On the sidelines of the EEF, the Aceh delegation led by Wali Nanggroe signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the delegation from Ivanovo Oblast, Russian Federation. This agreement opens up opportunities for cooperation in education, health, investment, and entrepreneurship, including academic exchange programs, health worker training, and investment promotion in Aceh.

In addition, leading Russian oil and gas company Sakhalin Energy has also expressed interest in investing in Aceh. This interest was conveyed by company management during a meeting with Wali Nanggroe on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at FEFU Vladivostok.

"Sakhalin Energy expressed interest in investing in Aceh as part of its expansion into Southeast Asia," said Wali Nanggroe.

Sakhalin Energy management responded positively to the opportunity to transport gas through Aceh for other markets and plans to conduct a working visit to Aceh this year to directly assess the energy potential in the field.

The Indonesian Ambassador to the Russian Federation, H.E. Jose Tavares, welcomed Aceh's move to expand its cooperation network in Russia. He emphasized the readiness of the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow to facilitate technical follow-up with relevant stakeholders.

"The Indonesian Embassy in Moscow is ready to support Aceh's efforts, of course in accordance with applicable regulations, so that concrete cooperation can be realized quickly," said Ambassador Jose Tavares.

The two parties agreed to form a joint working group to develop an action plan for the next 6-12 months.

The agenda will focus on exploring university partnerships, health training programs, promoting Aceh's strategic investment projects, and entrepreneurship incubation programs. An initial technical meeting is planned to take place online in the coming weeks.

On that occasion, Wali Nanggroe expressed its appreciation for the support of Ambassador Jose Tavares and the Indonesian Embassy staff, including the Indonesian Honorary Consul in Vladivostok, Anton A. Zubko, his assistant, Tatyana Andriyevna, and their team, for their assistance and coordination in ensuring the smooth running of the Aceh delegation's activities during the forum.

The meeting at the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow concluded with a luncheon.
