Recognize the Causes of Acid Reflux
Do you frequently experience heartburn, nausea, or stomach pain caused by stomach acid? See a doctor immediately. Excessive stomach acid production can be triggered by many factors, including stress, an irregular diet, and damage to the stomach lining. However, stomach acid is still necessary for the body to initiate digestion and kill pathogenic bacteria that enter the stomach.
Dr. dr. Neneng Ratnasari, SpPD., a practitioner and internal medicine specialist at Sardjito General Hospital, said that acid reflux disease is closely related to stress and anxiety. Not all triggers are due to food or stomach disorders. "All cases require supporting examinations. As doctors, we must take a history and provide evidence," Neneng said at the book review of "Comprehensive Biomedical Science: Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, and Pancreatic Systems" on Thursday (11/18).
Neneng stated that she often encounters patients with relatively healthy stomach anatomy, but who frequently experience excessive stomach acid production due to high levels of anxiety. "Many of our patients suffer from this," she said.
In addition to stress and anxiety, dietary habits also contribute to the development of acid reflux disease. "Sleeping on your back after eating weakens the esophageal muscles, eating too quickly, or frequently consuming fast food. Eating habits should also be improved, as should the types of food," she explained.
Dr. Ahmad Hamim Sadewa, Ph.D., a lecturer in Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine and Public Health, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), stated that everyone should maintain a balanced stomach acid balance. Stomach acid is necessary for the digestive process. "Without stomach acid, digestion cannot begin; various large foods become smaller. However, excess stomach acid will cause them to reflux into the esophagus," he said.
According to him, excessive gastric acid secretion is caused by stress, irregular eating habits, and anatomical damage to the stomach wall. "It's important to understand the level of stress, poor diet, or structural abnormalities seen radiologically," he emphasized.
