Glenmore, a Blend of Nature and History in Banyuwangi
The name Glenmore suggests a word of foreign origin rather than Indonesian. However, Glenmore itself is actually a sub-district in East Java Province.
Located in Banyuwangi Regency, it offers green panoramas, cool air, and a unique history. The area sits at an elevation of approximately 372 meters above sea level.
The name Glenmore is of Scottish or Irish origin, with a history of Scottish Catholic migration in the 18th century. They established a settlement in Banyuwangi, traces of which still remain today.
In the early 20th century, this area was home to a tobacco plantation called Glenmore, owned by Ros Taylor. Glenmore Sub-district covers an area of 368.89 square kilometers.
And, from August 11 to September 30, 2025, the Pandanwangi train will add six new stops here. Glenmore Station is one of the points now served by the train.
The additional stops are a response to the closure of the national line in the Gumitir area. Access for tourists and residents to Banyuwangi and Jember is now easier.
In addition to Glenmore, the Pandanwangi train also stops at Ledokombo, Sempolan, Garahan, Sumberwadung, and Argopuro. This route offers a stunning green panorama along the journey.
Glenmore boasts tourism, agriculture, and plantation potential that complement each other. Cocoa, coffee, and horticulture are also economic centers in this area.
The Kendenglembu plantation produces export-quality edel cocoa for the European market. Its processed products have reached Switzerland, France, and the UK.
According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data, Glenmore's population reached 78,397 in 2023. They are spread across seven villages, with the main strengths being the agriculture and tourism sectors.
"Glenmore has a uniquely Indonesian tourism potential, from its natural landscape, rich plantations, to the historical stories inherent in its community. With this additional stop, we hope that more people will be able to access the various interesting destinations in this area, such as Umbul Bening and Doesoen Kakao," said KAI Vice President of Public Relations Anne Purba on Sunday (August 10, 2025).
Destinations like Umbul Bening and Doesoen Kakao are just minutes from the station. Umbul Bening offers a spacious pool, slides, and comfortable family facilities.
KAI confirmed that the travel adjustments have been coordinated with the Directorate General of Railways at the Ministry of Transportation. Tickets are available at station ticket counters and through the Access by KAI app.
That's my post this time, thank you.
