The National Museum of Australia, Canberra
Last weekend, I visited The National Museum of Australia which brings to life the rich and diverse stories of Australia through compelling objects, ideas and events. This museum like all Australian museums is an interesting place to visit with great exhibition of historical and and artistic display.
I had visited this museum in 2019 but I found a few new design in this Museum, for instance the design now allows for spectacular views over Canberra, while the "Discovery Centro" opens a part of the museum which was not the same previously.
The Main Hall, is shaped like a giant knot seen from the inside. This in my views symbolize and tell the stories about bind Indigenous and migrated Australians.
Gift Shop
The museum welcomes you to this Mosaic Gardens. These are inspired by the Indigenous practice of fire stick farming for clearing and to produce regrowth.
This pattern of forest growth has come after a fire probably started in 2019 which changed a lot in this country especially in ACT. All these species are indigenous and many are masterpieces.
The entire museum is divided in different segments and galleries:
- Great Southern Land
The Gallery is home to the most valuable collection of art in Australia, the national collection comprises over 155,000 works of art, including the world’s largest collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.
The significant collection represents the whole of Australian art, modern art worldwide, particularly from Europe and America, and art from across Asia and the Pacific.
- First Australians
The area takes the visitors new entrance toward the "Garden of Australian Dreams" and the Gallery of First Australians. This area is also the gathering point for groups especially school excursions which is a regular feature here.
- Garden of Australian Dreams
- Peninsula Room
- The children’s Play Space
Here you will see a 30-metre loop, an extension of the Boolean string, lands on a thick red footpath that points to Uluru.
The way the museum has changed and developed over time has kept pace with the changes I have been seeing in Australians life. I see a different Australia now that I have been here for the last 14 years, and I saw a different Museum this time than what I saw 6 years ago. I am so sorry that I had not enough time to visit all the galleries thoroughly.
