After getting my learner's permit. I got my dates for training and pre trails. My trial date was due on 20th March 2025. I started my training on 1st February. There were few training packages to choose. As I applied for Scooter and Manual Van I got the 20 day package for Van and 7 day package for Scooter. Before coming to Driving school I had zero experience with Manual vehicles. My husbund has an auto car so I couldn't practice gear shifting with that, Even manual gear is little bit difficult to catch I signed up with it because if we pass,it allows to drive both manual and auto vehicles. Also I don't have a scooter at home, even I didn't want to ride a scooter I applied for it as a challenge for myself and also for future benefits.

Training Journey

So this is my honest story of getting my driver's licence which I thought will be the easiest part of getting a licence but ended up being more complicated, tiring , and depressing 😁🥲. ( Girls please do share experiences below, for boys I know driving is in their blood)

On the very first day of training there were four -five students. I was the newcomer. There I observed others getting trained, wrote down basics, Also I had to drive 🥲. I knew nothing about gear shifting and steering balance though. Any how with the help of the trainer I managed to drive some distance . Stopping the van was the most challenging part. Among trainers of the driving school I mostly trained with the best but most hot tempered one. But he trained us well and also I got tons of blames for doing mistakes which he catches instantly. Almost everyone faced it but at the end I was confident enough to drive alone.

Van training basically includes

1. Direct driving ( start, clutch balance, gear shifting, speed control, decision making, steering control, hand signal, stoping etc )

We need to get ✔️ for all above criterias to enter the next training which is clutch balance. No matter how many days you trained if the training sheet isn't completed with all ✔️✔️ you are not recommended for clutch balance training even your trial date is close. So we have to dedicatedly learn .

2. Clutch Balance
Here we have to drive along a steep area only with clutch balance. If we get it correctly, next we move for reversing

3. Reversing

Here we have to reverse the van in a marked location which is mainly tested at driving trials.

Along with Van training I practiced "8" with scooter which I trained only 3 days properly. 4 days I trained how to drive with balance.

I did all these while hardly working for school sport meet , which my house won but unfortunately I couldn't finish my training on time. So I had to skip my trial for the next date . Also I payed fines for that.

At the last days of training my mother was hospitalized , I had to take care of her, go for trainings, Go for work. That was the tiring and depressing part of this . Any how I managed to give my trials, pass and get my lisence at the end 🥰.

I'm greatful for few friends I met at training, my husbund as well whoom encouraged me a lot and also the staff was dedicated much. Expect one person all others were able to get the lisence that day.

After all it was a nice ending, a nice experience

Based on my experience this is my final opinion on applying for lisence.

  1. Don't go for lisence trials without a proper training and until you confident enough for trials . Because in srilanka everyday accidents happen due to carelessness and bad driving. So Get your lisences legally...

  2. Do a background research before selecting the driving school

  3. Ask about all traing packages before doing any payment

  4. If you have a auto vehicles at home and you could train with it or if don't intend to drive manual in future , do apply for Auto category. It'll save your money and time. ( Specially for girls)

Because even I tried hard and got manual lisence I won't drive manual vehicles 🥲😁.

So this is it. I hope this will help for some future driving lisence appliers.
