Rangiri Dambulu Temple - Dambulla -Sri-Lanka

Few days a ago I went on a trip to north central part of srilanka. At there I was able to visit some significant places in Sri Lanka. Among them I've selected Rangiri Dambulu Buddhist temple as my entry for @steem-atlas . Thank you @damithudaya for organizing this contest.

The Golden Temple of Dambulla aka රන්ගිරි දඹුලු විහාරය is an ancient cave temple belongs to Kandyan dynasty. This temple is situated in Dambulla which is nearly 157 km away from Colombo. Since 1991 it has become a UNESCO nominated world heritage site . This place is a major tourist attraction in Sri Lanka.

If you start your journey from Colombo. You can follow the following route. Public transportation and private transportation can be used.

According to Google maps , this journey will take around 3hrs 18 mins via private transportation. We traveled there by a bus. We selected evening for this journey because we have to hike a significant amount of distance to reach ancient caves. So sunrays didn't hit us.

Entry fee

Locals - Free Entrance
Foreigners- 51.3 steem / 2000 LKR

This is the last stairway before the entrance to the cave temple. We have to hike on rocks and walk along stone stairways until we reach here .

The view from the top is breathtaking. Night view is so amazing. We can see a huge area of Dambulu.

History of the temple

This cave temple has been built by Srilankan king Walgamaba as a gratitude for being his safe place over 14 years from enemies. When he came back to throne he transformed this place. After him King Nishshankamalla, King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe has contributed for the development of this temple.

Inside view of the cave is fascinating and it made me realize how talented were the ancient artists. Paintings and statues of Lord Buddha can be seen inside. The effort they have took to paint of cave roof is unbelievable.

If you visit srilanka, don't forget to visit this wonderful ancient temple which is definitely worth visiting.
