Our Trip to Polonnaruwa..
We had been waiting a long time to take our parents on a trip, but due to various reasons, we couldn’t fix a date to take them together.
So, we finally decided to take the families separately whenever they were available. This weekend, we took my husband's family on a trip to Polonnaruwa.
We fixed the dates two weeks back and booked rooms for five people. Polonnaruwa is known for its ancient ruins, so we did some research on YouTube to pick out some destinations.
On the way to Polonnaruwa, we stopped by Dambulla Golden Temple. The Golden Temple is famous for its giant Buddha statue. We also visited the museum there.
Then, we headed towards Polonnaruwa along a very beautiful road, which had a small river running alongside it. The trees beside the lake added fabulous beauty to our view.
First, we stopped by Giritale Wewa, which is the deepest lake in Sri Lanka. We stayed there for a while and enjoyed the beauty of the location.
Without taking much time, we then reached the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. The entrance fee was only Rs 60 per vehicle, and there were multiple car parks that made it easy to reach different places. It was around 1:30 PM, and the weather was sunny with a clear sky. This made it difficult to walk barefoot on the stone floors, so we couldn’t spend much time at the first few places like Watadageya, Atadageya, and Hatadageya. We decided to have lunch first and then visit the Thiwanka Image House, which we could reach more comfortably.
We visited the sites in reverse order so that we could reach places with lower heat first and gradually move to other places during sundown.
We visited Nelum Pokuna, Rankoth Vehera, King Parakramabahu’s Palace, and Gal Viharaya. The ancient city had many more places to explore too.
By 4:30 PM, we reached our hotel and settled down, cherishing the memories of a beautiful day.
