Entertainment Blog #336 | Dept. Q [2025 -] : Cold Cases Reopened...
If you are a crime drama fan, you know what a cold case means. It's an old unsolved case that investigations had been closed due to a lack of evidence. You see, in these days, some political crimes are surfacing after 3-4 years and it's kinda similar situation. It's hard to dig down to a cold case as it's old and most evidence are misplaced. But the journey of solving those are worth watching.
Dept. Q is a #Netflix original British #crime #thriller #series in which the first season was released pretty recently. It consists of 9 episodes and Matthew Goode, Chloe Pirrie, Alexej Manvelov, and Leah Byrne play main roles here. The series doesn't sound like a miniseries, and with the positive ratings received, this would probably be renewed for more seasons.
The story of Dept. Q goes around DCI Carl Morck, who had been in a nasty ambush at a crime scene. There, Hardy and Morck came to inspect a crime scene of a dead male. The police officer on the scene told not to go inside until help arrives but Morck pushed to go inside anyway. And that ended with a shooting by a masked gunman who was inside the building.
The police officer died, and Morck and Hardy were severely injured. Morck recovered to normal, but Hardy became paralyzed. This incident shocked him inside and made his physical health weak. His relationship with his ex-wife and stepson may affect it as a catalyst.
While attending for therapy sessions, Morck decided to join yo work again. His own case is still unsolved but he can't be involved in it according to the law. In the interim, the police station received a good amount of budget to make a new department to solve cold cases as the society is blaming the police for not solving cases efficiently.
So the Commanding Officer, Kate, decided to appoint Morck in the new department and decide what the requirements are to solve these cold cases. In the interim, Akram Salim from IT Department is seeking an opening in the Crime Division. Since DCI Morck is not good with report reading, Akram was assigned to work with him. And they were given an old floor of the department building to continue work as Department Q.
What's in Morck's head is his own case. While he was trying to get his act together, Akram started looking into cold cases and properly classified them to choose a case to solve as CO Kate was ordered.
Just like that, Akram chose the missing case of Merritt Lingard, a prosecutor who had made several questionable decisions, resulting in the incarceration of innocent people. But it's been 4 years since she disappeared. The evidence was not strong enough to follow through. But when they start talking to people, things get very interesting. And it may lead to solving this case. Will they solve the case? It's up to you to find out.
