Tech Blog #220 | Sony 1 VII : Let's Compare with Last Years..
The Sony brand is so popular in the Photography world. Not only by Sony cameras, but also smartphone camera sensors. And then there's their #smartphone lineup, where they don't apply their own best camera sensors to their smartphone lineup where they still use years-old 12MP sensors rather than using their brand-new 50MP sensors. I can't understand the logic behind it. In the interim, Sony released the #Sony 1 VII, their 2025 flagship. I don't see that much of an upgrade, so let's compare it with its flagships from the last 2 years.
Physically, there are no changes from last year. I mean, it's the same dimensions as last year. In last year, the aspect ratio of the display changed from 21:9 to 19.5:9, but since 2023, it's the same Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, aluminum frame, and IP68 dust and water resistance. So it's zero upgrades from last year to this year in protection & display departments.
It's obvious that the processor changes every year to the current flagship SOC, being the Snapdragon 8Elite for this year. But the Android update policy has changed from year to year. It has been upgraded from 2 updates for 1V, 3 updates for 1VI, and 4 Android updates for 1VII. But Sony is unreliable when it comes to #Android updates.
Before the 2023 Sony 1V, they used 12MP sensors in all back cameras and 8MP for the front camera. In 2023 with 1V, they switched to 48MP main camera, and they're using the exact sensor even for 1VII. Also with 1V, they brought continuous optical zooming capability for the telephoto camera but no upgrades to the sensor. But they should at least do one highlighting upgrade so they upgraded the ultrawide sensor to 48MP and that's it.
For years, they have used the side-mounted fingerprint sensor for the flagship, which looks outdated now. And the battery capacity is another area Sony had stagnated in for years. It's still 5000mAh with just 30W fast charging & 15W wireless charging.
Even though they haven't offered any noticeable upgrades over the years, their price has gone up to €1499. I don't know whether the sales are doing any good for them. But the color variants looks nice though, specially the pink one.
There's a niche of people who love Sony stuff. The manual controlling that can be done in camera on Sony smartphones is impressive, but its software department is not doing enough to keep up. That's a big bummer for normal users. And over the years, Sony had failed to provide solutions for users.
