Our tiny wall friends, Geckos.

Geckos are a small type of lizard that can be seen running across our walls and ceilings or hiding behind our picture frames. As Sri Lanka is a warm country, it is very common to see them in our houses. Even though they live with us very closely, our knowledge about them is very little. Today, with this article, I want to share some basic facts about geckos.

We are all aware that a gecko is a small reptile. They have a translucent body, a tall tail, and big eyes. Because they lack eyelids, they always wipe their eyes with their tongue rather than by blinking. Their sticky toes help them to climb smooth walls. Therefore, they can run upside down without falling. These geckos are very active, especially at night. Have you noticed that some geckos can change their color a little?

They are insect eaters. They love to eat insects like mosquitoes, moths, ants, and even cockroaches. Therefore, when you see a gecko in your house, don’t be afraid; they are not harmless. They don't attack or bite people. When we go close to them, they run away in fear. Instead, they help to keep our house clean.

There are many myths about geckos among humans. Some people believe that if a gecko fell onto their shoulders, it would bring misfortune. Some believe geckos are poisonous. However, those facts are incorrect. Geckos do not bring bad luck and are not poisonous. These are only stories passed from one person to another. Some people believe it is bad luck if they hear a gecko's sound when they depart the house. All those are only beliefs, not the truth.

Geckos can also be thought of as small housekeepers. They consume a variety of troublesome insects, including mosquitoes. That will help us protect ourselves from diseases like dengue. Since food is laid out in the kitchen and dining area, we frequently see them there.

In our childhood, we enjoyed playing with geckos. We gave them rice using the midribs of coconut leaves. During our dinner time and study time, we prefer to watch them running across our walls. Sometimes, we are afraid of them, especially when they fall from the ceiling. We enjoyed seeing them at our home throughout our childhood. Sometimes our parents scared us by reminding us of geckos to get us to go to sleep.

All of these facts bring us to the conclusion that geckos are harmless and helpful to people.
