Loco Running Shed Visit – A Glimpse into the Heart of the Train

I believe the loco running shed in Bangladesh is a reflection of the old British railway system that once laid the foundation of our rail network. One such remarkable place is the Lalmonirhat Loco Running Shed.

If you are someone who loves history, the story of Bangladesh Railways will take you on an exciting journey through time. The Lalmonirhat running shed offers a fascinating look at how train engines are serviced, maintained, and prepared before they return to the tracks.

Overall, visiting this place feels like more than just a tour, it’s an educational trip that connects you with the living history of our railways and the hardworking people who keep them running every day.

What is a Loco Running Shed?

A loco running shed is one of the most vital workplaces in our railway system. A locomotive is considered the heart of any passenger train, and to keep this heart beating smoothly, it needs regular care and maintenance.

The place where these locomotives are taken for servicing, inspection, and repair is called the loco running shed. Before each journey, several crucial parts such as the wheels, brakes, and engine are carefully checked to ensure everything is functioning perfectly.

Once the inspection and necessary maintenance are complete, the locomotives are released again for long-distance travel. In short, the loco running shed is the backbone of railway operations, the place where locomotives are prepared to run safely and efficiently every single day

Location and Environment

The Lalmonirhat Loco Running Shed is located only about 290 meters away from the Lalmonirhat Railway Station. Usually, loco running sheds are built close to the main stations so that locomotives can be quickly taken in for maintenance and just as easily returned to service once they are ready.

Though relatively small in size, the Lalmonirhat shed sits in a charming area surrounded by a natural and peaceful atmosphere that immediately caught my attention. Some of the old structures and equipment here still reflect the heritage of the British railway era, giving the place a nostalgic touch.

The overall structure of the shed carries a strong British architectural vibe, reminding visitors of a time when such buildings were constructed during colonial rule. While there’s no clear record of exactly when it was built, its design and setup clearly resemble that period’s engineering style.

When you stand here, you can hear the constant sound of engines being repaired, tested, and started, mixed with the smell of oil and smoke. Together, these elements create an authentic railway environment that gives you a real sense of how locomotives are cared for before they hit the tracks again

Maintenance and Daily Activities

To ensure both the efficiency and safety of railway engines, every locomotive must undergo regular maintenance, repair, and performance testing at the loco running shed.

Here, different parts of each locomotive are thoroughly cleaned to keep them shiny and free from dust or grease that could affect performance. Any mechanical issues or technical faults found during inspection are carefully checked and fixed by skilled technicians to make sure the engine operates smoothly.

Each locomotive follows a specific maintenance schedule, and the shed staff must complete all necessary servicing within that time frame. Their main goal is to make every engine fit and ready for operation, ensuring it is safe enough to run on long routes.

Besides repair and inspection, the shed also provides proper facilities for fuel refilling, part testing, and engine startup checks. The entire environment is designed to allow workers to carry out their tasks efficiently, even amidst the sounds of heavy engines and the rhythmic pulse of railway life.

Additional Information

The shed remains open 24 hours a day, and I even saw a massive crane inside, which is used for lifting and moving heavy engine parts during repair work. Nearby, there are several small offices where railway staff manage documentation, testing schedules, and coordination.

The Loco Running Shed area is fully covered by CCTV surveillance, ensuring proper security at all times. Public entry is strictly restricted, which means ordinary visitors are not allowed to enter inside the shed or its office premises. However, the outer view of the area can be seen from nearby without any issue.

One interesting thing about the Lalmonirhat shed is that it has a relief train ready at all times. In case of an accident or emergency anywhere on the railway line, mechanics and technical staff quickly travel on this relief train, carrying all the necessary tools and repair equipment to the affected location.

If you wish to explore the entire loco running shed closely, it’s best to have someone who works in the railway department to guide you. Having a known railway staff member can help you move freely inside and learn about the operations in detail, making your visit more informative and enjoyable.

Workers and Engineers

The most essential tasks inside the loco running shed are carried out by mechanics and engine fitters. Their tireless efforts ensure that every locomotive runs safely and efficiently. Since it’s impossible for one person to work around the clock, the workers here perform their duties in different shifts throughout the day and night.

Most people don’t realize how much hard work goes on behind the scenes to keep trains running smoothly. These technicians are the unsung heroes of the railway, without their dedication, the engines wouldn’t function properly, and train journeys could easily turn dangerous.

There is always at least one mechanic on duty 24 hours a day, making sure that any mechanical or technical issues are handled immediately. Each group of mechanics and fitters works under the supervision of an in-charge officer, who monitors and coordinates the maintenance process to keep everything running seamlessly.

Their teamwork, skill, and discipline form the backbone of the entire railway operation, quietly keeping every train on track and every passenger safe.

Technology and Equipment

Although Bangladesh Railways is gradually becoming more modern, the loco running sheds still give off a somewhat old-fashioned vibe. Most of the tools and machines used here are from the past, mechanics still rely on traditional wrenches, cylinders, pistons, and valves that have been in use for decades.

Inside the shed, there’s also a dedicated area where various testing tools and measuring instruments are kept. These are used by mechanics during inspection and repair work to ensure each part of the locomotive functions correctly.

One of the most fascinating things I noticed was an old water pump system built during the British era, used to fill steam or diesel engines with water. I was truly amazed to see that, despite being installed many decades ago, it’s still working perfectly today.

The world around us has become increasingly advanced, and technology continues to evolve, yet our railway maintenance system still follows the British legacy. It’s not because people don’t want change, but because upgrading such an old system requires massive financial investment.

While the British railway setup has served us well for generations, depending solely on that outdated framework can hold us back. If modernization doesn’t happen soon, we’ll continue facing issues like engine breakdowns, schedule delays, and slow maintenance. Embracing new technology is the only way to make our railway system faster, safer, and more efficient for the future.

Personal Experience

The Lalmonirhat Loco Running Shed is one of the most beautiful and fascinating sheds I’ve ever seen. You don’t get to see such places everywhere. What amazed me the most was its British-era structure, the design, the setup, and the overall atmosphere truly reflect the legacy of the old railway system.

The shed area is quite spacious and located in a quiet, peaceful environment, providing enough room for the workers to carry out their daily maintenance activities. The old water pump caught my attention, despite its age, it still looks impressive and functional.

Overall , visiting a loco shed was a truly educational experience. Unless you’ve seen it with your own eyes, it’s hard to imagine the amount of effort, precision, and hard labor that goes on behind the scenes to keep our trains running smoothly. It gave me a deep appreciation for the people who work tirelessly to keep the railway system alive and moving.
