"SLC26-W1 | Street Business Diaries: Street Food and Snacks."
Street food is necessity and also an important part of our livelihood; the share of local traditions, cooking pattern, different food flavors, accessibility/ affordability to people, meals diversity, social connection with individuals and most importantly the economic roles it plays.
Street foods vendors are life savers in my location, at any given time you can have access to various foods of your choice although, most foods has their timing example;
Food | Sell Hours |
---|---|
Akara | morning |
Fries | Morning, afternoon and evening |
Suya | Evening |
Tea | Morning, afternoon and evening |
Noodles | morning, afternoon and evening |
Corn (roasted / boiled) | Afternoon and Evening |
Boli | Afternoon and Evening |
Kilishi | Evening |
Pastries | Morning afternoon and evening |
We have different types of street foods available in every area; pastries, cooked foods like beans, rice, roasted/ grilled meals like; yam, fish and chicken. You can find the vendors by the road side or under umbrella or small shed.
Frying process of akara (bean cake)
Yes, I have eaten street foods several times but I mostly go for snacks because of trust issues during preparation process. Street foods are affordable and easy to get when needed.
For the purpose of this challenge, I was able to capture two different types of street snacks when purchasing; akara( bean cake) and Okpa ( made from beans ; Bambara nut specie).
Price |
---|
Akara is sold for #50 (0.25 steem) to #500 ( 2.5 steem) depending on the size.
Okpa is sold for #300 (1.5 steem) and #500 (2.5 steem) it’s usually wrapped in two sizes.

Street foods business seems rosy and lucrative because of high number of targeted audience and buyers but the truth is; these sellers keep facing a lot challenges daily.
What are the struggles;
- Lack of stability
- Competitive market because of open space
- Weather issues; rain and heat from harsh sunlight ( you can see on this photo below, where the lady was putting on rain coat because it's raining season)
- Harassment from ministry of environment
- Insecurities on the road
- Stigma and disrespect.
- Most of the vendors complain about health challenge.
The positive impacts of street foods business in our society is unmatched and everyone can attest to its importance.
A food spot that brings people together because of its flavor, taste and affordability. A spot where culinary traditions are shared and maintained through recipes example; two great recipes of street foods has been passed from generation to generation (methods of making akara and also boli )
Street food vendors also get to enjoy the privilege of paying less tax along the road to maintain a spot due to lack of resources to rent space like restaurant or store. This way their prices differs/ cheaper which also adds to economic growth and society at large.
