I am very interested in participating in this first week of season 26 Steemit engagement challenge. In this contest, we are going to learn about different varieties of roadside food through user participation from different countries.

What kind of street food is available in your city or area?

Nigeria consists of different tribes, and the major tribes are Hausa, Yórúbá, and Igbo. Each tribes have their own varieties of street food, which most of them enjoy. In my city, we have different kinds of street food, but it depends on which one you love most.

Every morning, there is one woman who normally sells masa or waina, and the English name of that local food is called rice cake. This type of street food is common in northern Nigeria because it gives them unique taste they need. I love eating street food, especially in the morning before the lunch prepared in the family.

Presently, there is cold weather in Nigeria, and in fact, when I am going to my place of work, I see some groups of people taking hot tea in the morning to keep them warm.

We have different varieties of street food such as snacks, puff puff, bread, groundnut, and so on. Most of the sellers are usually found on the roadside to meet the needs of their customers.

Have you eaten these foods yourself? Show their taste and price in pictures+videos.

Yes, I have eaten this street food by myself, and I enjoy eating it because it is so delicious, as well as it gives me a long-lasting taste that makes me request more. There is one place in my area where most travelers would likely stop to enjoy any street food of their choice, so it's a nice place for me to enjoy a good balanced diet.

Although the price of this street food varies based on the ingredients they use to prepare it, all these street foods are not that costly, but now everyone has changed to something else.

What did you learn about the shopkeeper's struggle?

I see them as hustlers, young boys and women who work very hard to ensure their families do not go to bed with empty stomachs. Some of them wake up as early as 6:00 AM to meet the needs of their customers who patronize them.

In my area, most of the people who normally sell street food are Hausa, and it is not easy for some of them to travel down to North Central. In some cases, some of them often die while on that journey. This struggle pays off for them, as many of those who start small are now expanding their businesses to other places, while those in one location are making progress and gaining a lot of customers' attention due to their customer service relations.

What do you think about the importance of these small street food businesses in our society?

➡️ It contributes to the economic development of a nation as well as to the host community by giving them the chance to do their business. They established this business to meet different needs of the consumers.

➡️ Street food is cheaper to the extent that everyone can afford it, including both young and old, which generates income for the owners to take care of their families.

➡️ Street food also provides employment opportunities for young graduates who have just finished university or college. This enables individuals to be self-employed without depending on government jobs.

➡️ They are located in busy areas such as schools and marketplaces, which is why consumers can easily grab what they need without any difficulty.

Conclusion

Street food serves as an alternative to homemade food, and in most cases, the sellers always engage in meaningful interactions with buyers to the extent that you will come back another day.
